My friend is looking for newborn photography and tons of people responded on facebook about how it costs an arm and a leg. My friend wants awesome pictures, has plenty of money, but doesn't want to get taken advantage of. What is a typical price for professional newborn photography when the photographer is not your friend/family?

we had someone come to the house for about 4 hours and cost $150, if I remember correctly. but I think that's pretty cheap. I'm in the Northeast, too.
eta: we received a disc with edited photos. she was a professional but about to take a (still going) break, so I think she gave us a deal.

The cheapest Ive really seen is around the $150 mark, for someone who is semi-professional and not just a momtographer. I think ive generally seen them more around the $300-400 mark. Newborn photography is tricky and takes a lot of time and patience, so it tends to be more expensive.

Ours was about a 3 hr session for 200. She included a disk with all the pics edited.

Ours is going to be $400 and includes a disc with all images. For quality photos, this is a pretty good price. Also had a discounted maternity session for $100.

I was going to say that $500 is average. I think that's what we paid. It's a lot longer than many photo session. Ours was like 4 hrs, because you have to feed, change diapers, and hopefully get baby to sleep!

The Signature 2 hours session $250
This session is 2 hours session that can be done in studio or on location. This includes your session fee for up to 4 people ($15 for each additional person). This package includes a high resolution disc with 20-40 edited images from your session.This is what was sent to me from out photographer. I'm kind of disappointed that it's only 2 hours but maybe that won't be so bad as our engagement photos (different photog) were 1 hour long and we got plenty of great pictures. I like that this includes pictures of us, too

I used to charge $200 when I was newer. I charge $300 now for an in-home session that is usually around 2-3 hours. I sell more packages though than just newborn sessions. All sessions include high res pics, usually around 50-75 per session. Package prices:
First Year Package #1 (newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, 12 month sessions): $1,200
First Year Package #2 (newborn, 4 month, 8 month, 12 month sessions): $950
First Year Package #3 (newborn, 6 month, 12 month sessions): $750 -
For DS we paid $300 for the session + high resolution files. We are hiring a different photog to do DD's and it will be around $400.

I would expect between $200-$400, depending on geographic location. I wanted to gift a shoot for a friend in NY and couldn't find any less than $350, most of them closer to $500.

Then you had to buy a minimum of $150 in prints
So the cheapest would be $300 but we spent more because there was sooo many awesome ones -
We bartered for ours, but our photographer typically charges $250.

For our son, we paid $300 for a 1hr in-home session + high res files with printing rights. She included all the images in both color and black and white on the disc, which was great, but I wasn't 100% thrilled with how they came out, so I'm trying out a new photog this time.
This time around, I need to pay for the session and images separately. The session fee is $150 for 3-4 hours, which can include some pics with other family members. She also threw in a free mini-maternity session for free. There is a range in prices for the photo packages, but I'm thinking we'll end up spending and additional $300 on that. She has all sorts of props, so we need to travel to her home studio, but honestly, I am happy about this bc I won't have to worry about having a spotless house/nursery days after returning home from the hospital.

We paid $150 for a couple of hours and got a disc with the rights to the photos. I think there were about 30-40 edited images.

We live in a less expensive area. Our photographer charged about $300 for a 3-4 hr session, then we got a disc with over 200 images. He charged more for prints, we haven't ordered any. The pictures were great, but we weren't in any of them. I would change that next time.

I live in an expensive area and my photographer who did my maternity photos chargers around $450 or $500 I think for newborn.

Ours were $150 for an hour in our home. She was fabulous and the pictures were amazing.

I have not seen anything cheaper than $300 and that's no digital rights, just a handful of prints. In Upstate NY.
But I also have really really picky photography taste....

I think we paid $300 (in studio session with around 10 digital photos + prints included) but we loved the photos and upgraded to a package with more photos included.
I have seen photographers charge anywhere from $250-1000 with digital files included.

This is totally regional.
When I looked at well-known photographers in our area, prices were $800 and up for a session plus digital rights. I was *so* excited to find a great deal--$300 for a session. Then I found out that was just the sitting fee, then you had to pay another $600 for digital rights (gulp!).
In the end, I used a random friend-of-a-friend who was newer to the business who still charged me $400 with all digital rights. That was the best deal I could find where I still liked the portfolio pictures.

$300 is the least I've seen for nice photography

i personally charge $225 for a session fee and prints and files are additional. i would say that clients spend around $500 on average. i usually spend MUCH more time with newborn sessions than with any other portraits and always get a family photo as well as i shoot at their house.

We paid $300, but we we didn't pay full price because we know her personally. I think she charges around $500 for a newborn session (sitting fee, prints, CD).

We paid £120 (~$200) for 3 sessions; newborn, 6mths & 12mths. I think that's kind of on the cheap end though.
