8% I thought it was supposed to drop back down to 7.5% since they increased gasoline taxes (ouch!) but it's been almost a month and it has yet to decrease

5.5% and our idiot gov keeps insisting if we raise it , no one will vacation here. Herp derp, he's never been out of this state.

%5. We were 12% until recently, but HST was struck down in referendum, so we're back to 5%, but on more things.

9.5% here in Seattle but we don't have a state income tax. Guess it's not too bad.
clementine / 899 posts
13% here. PST went up 1% July 1st. Big scandal as gov't somehow scooted around the referendum.

GST (goods and sales tax) is 15% here in NZ. Went up from 12.5% a few years ago

6% in my county, though I do a lot of shopping in another county where it's 7%.

6% Within the last year or two .5% was dripped. I guess we finished paying for a stadium or something.

6.25%. It used to be 5% which was so much easier to calculate. No tax on groceries or clothes though.
pineapple / 12526 posts
Everything here is subject to VAT (value added tax), which is 17.5%.

13% HST here in Ontario-but there are some things that only qualify for the 5% GST portion (like kids clothes). Question though: in the US is tax a municipal thing? Unless I am wrong, tax here is done provincially (save for things like a Vancouver gas tax, right?). Gosh, you feel you know how something works until you really start to think about it! Ha!

@bluestriped bee: Wow!! We don't have state income tax either, but we "only" have 8.25%

Mexican VAT is 16%. Although it's calculated into all prices so you pay the price on the tag. Otherwise it would really sting more!

4.2% in Missouri
Most cities add on additional sales taxes to make it 7.5% though (but not all of them!). My city + state is 5.4%

It's 8% in the town where I live in Missouri. I couldn't imagine 13%!! That's nuts!!

0% I forget about sales tax when I leave the state though...
@bisous: Delaware?? What part of Delaware did you used to live?

0% - Oregon FTW!
Although we make up for it in our other yearly taxes!

@BabyBoecksMom: oh, shoot. I was trying to think positively about our dreaded 9.5% sales tax. What state are you in?
pineapple / 12566 posts
@zippylef: Same here, VAT is around 20%. However, it is lower on food and books (10-12%). The nice thing is that you don't "see" it. When you see a price on something, that is the price, you don't have to add another 20%!

@yin: I lived in Newark for a few years when I was in school and then DH and I lived in Wilmington (Trolley Square) for a couple years, too! DH is from Sussex County. We still frequent DE a lot since we have a lot of friends who still live there!
Forgetting about sales tax when you leave the state stinks! What part do you live in?
