Someone I know just gave their child $5 for one tooth. Wow, talk about inflation! There are 20 baby teeth, right? That's $100 per child for all of those teeth. I got $1 per tooth.

I got $.50 per tooth. Maybe a dollar sometimes?
By the time my the tooth fairy was around for my sister, she was getting beanie babies.
According to inflation, I cannot afford the tooth fairy.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: haha, beanie babies. I have a plastic bin full of those somewhere. Maybe I can give R beanie babies instead of money.

My husband wants to make it special and give her $2 bills for each tooth. I like that idea.

I got a dollar, but by the time my youngest sister was losing teeth, it had been upped to two. I was robbed!! Haha. I like the idea of giving a dollar, plus a fun little gift - a Disney toothbrush, a small toy from the dollar store, something like that.

@swedishfish: um. No. I'm thinking $1 per tooth. IF we do it. I never got money or did the tooth fairy thing.

I think $1.00 is reasonable My mum came up with an inspired, though utterly illogical, way of guarding against inflation. We put our tooth in a glass of water and the tooth fairy would leave a 50 cent coin. If we tried to argue that our friends were getting $1 or $2 she'd tell us the tooth fairy couldn't leave that much because the bills would get wet.
Fortunately we lost all our teeth before we were smart enough to question why the tooth fairy couldn't just leave more than one coin, why it mattered if the bills got wet and what on earth a fairy was doing swimming around in a glass of water in the first place.
She was pretty annoyed when they introduced one and two dollar coins when I was six or so and she was forced to up the price of a tooth based on her own wacky logic.

a dollar? (if at all)
I didn't grow up with the tradition and DH did, so we'll probably do some version of it?

I guess I'm one of those annoying parents because I will probably leave $10 or $20 per visit. We will use it as a teaching opportunity to teach her how to use her money wisely. We will help her put some in her bank account and she can spend some.

I got a dollar and D gets a dollar. But my dad and DH's mom both match the tooth fairy per tooth lol. So he gets $3 a tooth in the end.

I seem to recall getting a quarter per tooth - and we thought that was great! I think it did eventually increase to $1 per tooth when the molars came in, but that was the max. We may do the same - it definitely won't be more than $1 per tooth though!

All but four of my teeth were extracted and I think my parents felt bad because the price went up for those. $1 for the ones that fell out, $5 for ones that we're pulled maybe? Molars were $5 too I think.

Ha, I got a quarter per tooth! I'm thinking the kids will get $1 per tooth.

Nothing because we aren't going to do it. But we also don't do Santa or the Easter bunny.
If we did do it, I would give $1max.

I think we'll do $1, but in a creative way, with different currencies. He can keep it, or he can research the exchange rates and exchange them for the equivalent amount of US dollars.
We have a large enough stash to get us through a few years before the novelty wears off.

I haven't thought about it yet. $5 seems high, maybe $1 or $2 per tooth. No idea though.
squash / 13208 posts
Maybe $5 for the 1st tooth - after that probably $1
My DS is 5.5 and he can't wait to lose a tooth! He is constantly feeling them to see if they are loose!

@Mrs. High Heels: Same! I got a quarter, so my kids will probably get $1. But I'll try to find the dollar coins so it's still a coin.

I think we got quarters and then maybe $1 towards the end. I will probably give $1-2 per tooth. I like the idea of $2 bills!

Hmm, I have a while to think about this still. First thought was $1. If I'm going to let her keep the money to spend how she wants, I'll probably stay with $1. If I make her put it in the bank, I may go higher to $10 or so - just a more fun way of adding to her savings than automatically contributing myself.
Or maybe I'll do $11 - $10 to put in the bank and $1 to keep... I think I like idea!

A guy I work with had a whole system for his kids to negotiate exchange rates of teeth for cash with the tooth fairy (if they went too high she backed out of the deal and they got nothing). I think I'm going to use his method!

@looch: That's a neat idea! I know we still have some Mexican and Cuban money lying around.

I hadn't really thought about it, but I used to get a book instead of money. Maybe I will do that!
coconut / 8472 posts
At this point I'm thinking $1. Maybe we'll do it as 4 quarters to seem like more, lol. Then they can put them in their piggy bank in the morning. I don't think kids that young need much money of their own and I feel like at that age they won't really get anything we try to teach about using it wisely. But I say that as the mom of a 6 month old and I reserve the right to change my mind :D.
