Just curious 
I was kind of assuming that car seats available for purchase would meet current safety standards and that stores are required to pull stuff that gets recalled. The car seat I picked out is a Graco and honestly, I picked it based on the pattern of the fabric and the fact that it was lightweight, had the handle I wanted, and snapped into a base.
I'm wondering if I should take a step back and do more research though..

I did some research, but I didn't go overboard on it. I look at some reviews, consumer reports etc, then looked at what the stores had, and picked something out

I read baby bargains and used all the recommendations from the bloggers here to make my decisions on everything. I've been happy with all of the gear we got!!!

I researched pretty much all the gear but we do that with everything we buy. I read Baby Bargains, checked Consumer Reports, Amazon, etc. Might be overkill for some but it makes me feel better so I do it.

I did a LOT of research on most of my gear, but more so based on user reviews and not so much on safety and consumer reports kind of stuff. Which sounds bad, but I figure if the item had really good reviews from users and was a very popularly purchased item, those bases were covered. When you Google stuff too, it often tells you if/when there were recalls, so I decided against stuff in that way too.

I did tons of research, but not regarding safety much like @shopaholic. I know all of these things meet strict safety guidelines, I was more concerned with quality, and ease of use. I ended up going with Britax for our car seat and stroller because of their high quality and the simplicity of their system.

I did quite a bit but mostly for our crib.
I researched strollers not so much for safety but because I had specific features in mind I wanted.
I didn't research the carseat because of reasons you listed, only minimally, and chose the carseat for a few different reasons rather than safety... well actually, I take that back as safety was the main reason we chose the one we have: it has the new "air technology" impact sides.

I did a lot of research on the stroller - UB Vista. There were only four car seat options, so that wasn't as difficult a decision. I'd seen the crib I wanted (Young America) before I got pregnant, but we shopped around to make sure it was the one I wanted. I did a lot of research on cloth diapers as well. Most other items were based on user reviews.

I read Baby Bargains and Lucies List for our gear selections. I took Amazon reviews with a grain of salt because I feel like most people want gear that can fly and make pancakes or else it gets 1 star -- totally unrealistic expectations. I found that the most recent edition of Baby Bargains was really thorough about safety issues, etc. and made ratings based on that as well as quality and price. So I felt comfortable using it to make our final decisions.

I did more research for my stroller than I did for my degree, lol. I did a lot for carriers too, but not for the car seat or crib. I wished I had researched swaddles more, it would have saved me a lot of cash/time/effort.

My research consisted of polling all my mommy friends! Almost all of our gear was bought based on recommendations from friends or fellow bees!

I did A TON of research. I had spreadsheets galore ... it was intense and insane I don't know if it was all necessary though. Like, I spent two weeks researching crib mattresses and cried because DH didn't look through the 500 links I had sent him. LOL.

I did a lot of research. I'm an engineer, I can't help it! We so took personal recommendations and aesthetics into account when we saw stuff in person. What was light/easy/etc. sometimes it was just a gut feeling, too

I also used Lucies List for most of our registry. Also read Amazon reviews. We went with Graco Snugride !
