I was wondering what people typically spend on gifts for their nephew? My SIL emailed me about doing a group gift for her son (her son from a previous marriage and our nephew via marriage to my husband's brother). She asked how much we want to put in and I feel awkward telling her how much we planned on spending. I had been planning to spend around $30 on his gift. That's about what my aunts/uncles spend on me when I was little. Does that amount seem okay or should it be more?

That is extremely awkward for her to ask you to go in on a group gift with her for her own child.... I think $30 is fine, but you should certainly feel comfortable saying you'd rather get your own gift. Or even say you already bought him one to avoid her pushing back.
I will spend about $50 on my niece, but it's her first Christmas and she's our only niece or nephew on either side. If I was buying for 5 kids I would spend a lot less.

I do think it's weird too but depending on your relationship? Personally if there was something my SIL knew my niece wanted I would rather contribute towards that.
I'm a little crazy and we are spending about $75 per niece and nephew. We have 7 total. I can't help spoiling the kids!

I have a few kids that we buy for and they are like nieces and nephews to us. We spend between $20-30 on each one.

I'm kind of confused. She's asking for a monetary contribution for a gift for her own child? I think that's a wee bit presumptuous, but I could be misreading.
Between us, my husband and I have four parents, six siblings, five nephews, one niece, and a plethora of aunts, uncles, and cousins. It's a lot! We're majorly cutting back on our holiday spending and gifting philosophy this year, so we'll likely do shared, family gifts, or something thrifty and homemade. $30 sounds just fine to me, though!

No neices or nephews, but God children and we will spend up to $50/ each. I think $30 is just fine and you can get a decent gift.

I would say I already bought a gift - it stops the awkward in it's tracks.
I only have 1 11 year old niece and we spend Christmas morning together at my parents house - my budget is $80 but I do that so I stay under $100. I always buy her a toy (this year just dance 2014 for the wii) and some clothes.

I think $30 is fine. I don't there is a right/wrong amount to spend on a gift. It's whatever you and your family are comfortable with..
