We've been invited to a birthday party this weekend for one of my son's preschool friends who is turning 3. We don't know him that well (since we just started preschool last month) so I was thinking about getting him a fun board game. The one I have in mind costs $20. Is that too little?

Thanks everyone!! I didn't want to appear like the cheap mama, especially since we just started the preschool. And I didn't want to spend too much and look like I was trying to butter them up.
@looch: At an indoor play gym. They'll be serving pizza. It's not a super formal setting but it's not super casual either (like at a park or someone's house). Kind of in between?

Usually, I gift two passes for the local children's museum, they're $15 each. I feel like that is good for a party not held at home.
For a home party, I dunno, I'd probably spend $25.

@dc yoga bee: I know! I'm excited! My son loves indoor play gyms but I love them even more because they can play for hours basically unsupervised. Ahhhhhh.... freedom....

$20 is right on budget in my opinion. I spend the most on 1st birthdays (money for college fund) but birthdays after that are all about kids' toys preference.

$20 sounds good to me. I usually do 529 contributions and I do $50 for close friends and $25 for less close friends.

@MamaMoose: How do you do 529 contributions? Do your friends send you their 529 account #? I'm a total newb at this. I think 529 contributions are SUCH a good idea.

@banana: nah I just write them a check and put "529" in the memo. I trust them to do the right thing with the money. But I haven't yet been invited to a day care friend's party so I don't know how I would feel about writing a check in that situation.
