We'd love to buy a brownstone in our Brooklyn neighborhood, but I think it would cost $1.5 million and up! So we will stay renters for now I guess.
Where do you live, and how much would your ideal home cost in your area?

We are currently looking for house right now. It isn't our ideal area but where we can afford the size we want.But if we had double the budget to get our ideal location and house, easily $700-$800K.

We're in Miami. In the area of my dreams (large lots, close to parks, good schools) the houses are anywhere from 500-900k and way beyond for newer renovations. Yikes!

I'm in the Tampa Bay area. I wouldn't want anything too fancy for my ideal home. I'd like to stay in my neighborhood, and I feel like it couldn't be over $200,000 right now.

We live in a north-west burb of Minnesota and our dream house would probably cost about 300,000-400,000. That would be about 3000-4000 sq ft, bignkitchen with stainless appliances and granite or stone counters, wood floors, 4 bd, 3 ba and lots of windows! My husband wants a wrap around porch.

The area where we would eventually like to move (we both grew up there) is a small, beach community in NC. I just did a quick search and it looks like most homes are 300-400k.

Our dream home would be a brick, ranch style house in the country with a barnyard and some land. It would be 4 bed, 2.5 or 3 bath, with a finished basement. Around here (Kansas) it would probably cost $300,000 depending on how much land we got with it and how good the land was. If we had land west of town it would be cheaper since the soil there isn't very good and doesn't grow crops as well. East of town, it would cost more because of the better soil quality.

My ideal home is a 3 bed 2 bath on the UWS which would probably start at around $2M in our desired area. If we wanted views it would be more like $2.5-$3M.

We currently live in the Nashville area and we could get a home that met every desire for probably around $400,000. We'll eventually move back to the Boston area where our families are and it will be closer to $700,000 to get everything we want. Our home is worth a lot less than our "dream" home and is also a lot less than what we could afford if we stretched to the max. But our home is great for us at this moment, it's in a lovely safe area with decent school, and it has three bedrooms plus a loft so plenty of space to grow into. Once we got our basic needs met we decided to stop there. We like the fact that if one of us lost our job we could still comfortably afford the mortgage.

Where we live now? Probably $400-500K but we want to move & then it'll be more...

Ideal? As in money's not an issue? Probably $1.5 - 2M. We'd love to live in a 4+ bedroom house in Capitol Hill in Seattle. It doesn't have to be the fanciest house on the block, but several bedrooms and close to Volunteer Park would be nice.
But in reality, we're shopping for homes right now in the $500k range (wow, it really sucks to go from talking about prices that end in an "M" to prices that end in a "k"). We haven't bought one yet, but there have been a few in the last few months that have sold for $475k - $525k that we've really liked and would be happy with, so for now, for our first real home, I am content with that budget.
In my hometown, we could buy a really great, big house in one of the most desirable neighborhoods for less than $300k. So depressing! Why can't we live there??

In Nebraska in the area we want to move, our house would be 275-300K, but we will be purchasing land with it, so that could put us up in the 750K area if not more.

We eventually want to move into a 4bd/2+br house with somewhere around 2000 sq ft. In our current area, that will be about $700k-900k. In our ideal area, we're looking at $1.5-2.5M.

We also want a brownstone, either in Brooklyn or the UWS. The ones we've drooled over in the past have been between 3 and 5 million--so quite out of our range, for now at least =P!

On the UWS, around $2.5-3M. In LA/OC Calif around $1.5M.

My dream house in our city would cost about $1 million. The kind of house we're saving for, that we plan to buy in 3-5 years, will be between $500-650k most likely. You can get a really nice house for that much money in our city.
We paid $365k for our current townhouse, which we adore.

A fairly ideal home would cost us between $400k and $600k. If we wanted lots of brickwork but totally updated inside and some water views, it would be more like $600k++. In Portland, Maine

Our dream home in our dream town would probably be around $2M. Boston is expensive. But I don't need a TON of land and I don't want a HUGE house (too expensive to clean, heat, and a/c) and we don't have to be TOO close to Boston so we could probably find something for around $2M. Now, to find $2M....

@mrs. wagon: Haha I'd be happy with several, but tops on the list are probably Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Belmont or Lexington. Everything's so expensive in eastern MA but I love it here!

@Rachel: I know, me too! We have been concentrating on the south side of the pike but Lexington or Belmont would be great too. We're more along the lines of Westwood, Needham, Wellesley but it's just so crazy expensive. Hingham is so nice too, but again crazy expensive and maybe just a little too close to the water... I'd get nervous around hurricane time
My boss lives in Belmont and she loves it there!

Wow! After seeing all the prices for everyone else's dream homes, I feel really lucky to live where I do because houses and land are so cheap down here! We could get everything we wanted in a house for $250-300k (max!). That's including 4 bdrm/3 bath, 2800-3000 sf, pool, 3 car garage, study, media/game room. There are so many new neighborhoods popping up that everything is priced to sell.

We live in a very central location/desirable neighborhood in the city so the ideal home here would probably be $2.5-3mn.

If I had 2-3 hundred k to spend on a house, I would be thrilled and set for life.
