We'll stop by the toy store once in a blue moon... we'll either buy something fairly inexpensive (like a temporary tattoo) or something educational.

These days, our son is obsessed with superheroes though and so he will ask for a superhero if he sees one. So we have to establish ground rules before we go into a toy store... that usually works ok, unless the kids are hungry/tired.
