We had a painter out for a quote today and he was talking about frequency of painting and I was kind of overwhelmed by his recommendations. Mostly, he was talking about exterior painting which his company doesn't even do, plus he's a friend so I don't think he was trying to just make more money off of us.

Inside, never? Once I find my perfect color I'm good with it practically forever since I don't really redecorate and change color scheme.
Outside, as needed, hopefully at least 10 years. We're doing the work ourselves right now and go back and inspect everything we've done every year to touch up as needed to help it last longer. -
Inside - 3-5 years, but only for high traffic areas. We have a 2 yr old who touches our walls and leaves behind fingerprints often, and the only way to touch up after a few years (because of paint fading from sunlight) is to completely repaint the walls. We tried spot painting and it was always a little off no matter how many samples we had matched and adjusted.
Outside - I thought it was every 10-12? Our house is 12 years old and still has the original exterior paint. It could use the paint for sure, but think we might try to stretch it another year or two.

I thought it would be that long too, ours was all done four and a half years ago and he was telling me that doing the exterior every 3-5 was normal. Ours is in rough shape and I am so bummed. It's a lot of money to put out that often! Inside he was saying that in high traffic areas and caulked areas we can expect to need to paint as frequently as annually. I guess that's not for the walls but it still feels crazy to me.

@Cole: wow 3-5 yes for exterior?! I always assumed at least 12! Our house is 10 years and exterior still looks fine - maybe a couple small chips here and there but it still looks neat and clean.
Interior - I wouldn't think to paint until it was time to move. Lol

@Cole: For the exterior I would go by how it looks, but no longer then 10-ish years. If the paint looks like it is failing (peeling, cracking) then you need to do it so you don't have further damage. Our painter told us that if the exterior is prepped well and then painted, it should last 8-10+ years.

Well we've been in our house for 4 years and the exterior still looks fantastic!
I only paint inside if I'm redecorating and changing a color scheme.

Inside- for some reason every 7 years sticks out. Unless prices for professional painters come down we certainly are not going to repaint ecery 7 years especially just to put up the same color. We've been in our home for 4 years and have painted the public spaces and guest room twice b/c it was part of an insurance claim. The rest of the house has had the same coat of paint since we moved in and painted.
Outisde- 10-12 years would be my guess. @Cole: painting every 3-5 years would get so expensive.

Well so far we've moved every 3 years and painted when we first moved in and just before selling. I'm hoping we will stay here longer so we will see how long it is before the urge takes us to decorate again - we are still working our way through the house, decorating each room (we've been here 6.5 months). I suspect it will work out every 5 years for inside and perhaps 7/8 for the external stuff.

We badly need to touch up/repaint the inside of our house, especially the kitchen, entry, and hallways. It was all painted 3.5 years ago. I'm waiting until DS 2 arrives. Maybe next summer '17, but part of me is like why bother, you will have 2 boys!
We don't have to paint our exterior since we have a brick house!!

I am glad to hear I wasn't totally off in my estimates! I can only assume at this point that since he's a painter and a bit of a perfectionist that he errs on the side of frequently. I had someone else out for an estimate and he said they guarantee their work for three years which seems fair I suppose. Our interior was painted five years ago and 98% of it still looks totally fine, I wish we had the paint to do touch ups though, especially for the moulding.

What kind of exterior do you have? We have aluminum siding which I kinda thought never got repainted unless you wanted a change? But I'd guess wood and other sidings might peel or need more upkeep.

Inside mostly only when I'm sick of the color. I'd say 5-8 years. Outside... never? We have siding that I don't think gets painted.

@ShootingStar: we have a Tudor style house, so mostly brick with painted wood/timber parts and some stucco. The beams are all about 100 years old so maybe they just require more care? The wood is all peeling and I complained about it to the two painters who came out and they both said it was to be expected. We really should have painted this past summer, or maybe even the summer before, putting us at three years which is insane to me. We just didn't budget to repaint that soon!

We moved into a painter's house. We can tell they painted frequently from the number of colors we've found on the walls and the collection of paint they left us. I don't see us painting more often than every 10 years unless we need to.

Inside as needed. We painted DD's room when we were expecting and Team Green, so when she's a little older we'll let her choose a new paint color. We'll only mess with the rest of the house if we get really sick of the color or get too many smudges.
Our exterior is brick, so no painting necessary.
