I found myself saying it a lot so I started changing my wording to, "let me finish dinner and then I'll play with you."
I found I was saying in a minute and then 10 or more would go by and I had forgotten to follow up with her and then I would feel horrible.

I usually say "hang on, let me do X" so it's tangible for her. Or I will ask her to be patient. And if she is, I tell her nice waiting, good job, thanks

@blackbird: @Ajsmommy: Same. I tell DS mommy is busy with (prepping dinner, doing dishes, etc.) and to tell him to wait till mommy is finished then I'll get/give it to him.
I do say X minutes to him if we're in the car and he wants out of his car seat. Doubt he understands time yet, but its 50/50 chance it works. Ha!

I'm guilty of this too. She is horrible at playing by herself so I want to reward her when she actually does wait patiently for me to finish something. I've started setting my iphone timer so that she has something to listen for and I don't forget what I promised her.

I'm definitely guilty of saying "in a minute", but then a minute will go by and I'm still not ready, so I'll have to revise what I'm saying! Xander keeps pestering me the whole time though, so it's not like it's effective at all...

I notice I say "hold on" a lot to my LOs. But when I remember, I try to be more specific; like "When I finish X I will do Y with you."

I must say "not right now" a lot because now when I ask her to do something, she looks at me and says "not right now, mommy".

I usually tell DS that when I finish whatever I am doing, I'll come. Or if I'm doing something that can wait, I'll go to him. He's to young to understand the concept of time, so I try to stay away from "in a minute".
