The groomer does it for us every 3-4 months.

Depends on the time of year and what he is doing! In summer I don't do him at all because I want him to have extra nail for traction for agility outdoors! We are busy enough with him at the cottage, events, walks, etc they manage themselves pretty well with exception to dew claws up front (do them every 3w or so). In the winter I try to do them as much as possible to keep the quick "up" so he is quieter on our hardwood floors!

He hates having them done, but is a good boy and rolls over for it and he lays on his back while I do all four paws!

I do them about once a month. It's easy on our Golden, but our lab hates it, so it takes both of us to get it done!

I also trim the cats' nails once a month, but they're really easy about it.

wow, a lot less often than most of you! we only do it when we notice them getting claw-like, maybe every 3 months or so. we trimmed their nails yesterday, and that was the first time since they were at the vet (they'll do it for free if we're already there) back in late October. to be fair though, we live in the city and the concrete in the sidewalks does a pretty good job of filing their nails, even yesterday it was only the middle two nails in their front paws that were long, the rest stay pretty short.

every few months. one of my dogs will bite his nails when they get too long so that helps. LOL!

@Dandelion: wow! I didn't know you needed to clip cat's claws, my cats have always scratched to do their own. My current kitty had his cut for the first time at the vet recently because his claw got stuck on the grate of his crate while we were there, I think since he's been sick he hasn't been up to doing them himself. Have you always clipped them or why did you start?

I tried to do it once myself and made it through one nail before vowing to take him somewhere to have it done. I was so afraid of cutting the quick and I think he could sense my nerves. He's not the kind of dog that needs to be groomed (Doxie) but I take him to the groomers once every 5-8 weeks to have it done. Totally with the $10!

I do it like... every 2 months? As long as she walks on concrete, the ground naturally files them a little bit. She hates it, but I've had her for 7+ years so she has gotten used to it.

Ugh never! poor dog. She has black nails and she screamed once when dh did it and now she looks horrified and she screams and I hate it! I feel bad so I leave them for the vet.

Never, but we live on a farm and he runs around outside a lot. He always takes care of them himself. We have a golden retriever.

We trim ours every month or so. His favorite game is to put his paw on your lap, and we trim them when he scratches!

@mamadee: do you have a brand of clippers that you recommend?

Honestly, the ones that your vet office uses would probably suffice! I've bought clippers before at petsmart and they aren't sharp enough. Let me check he brand we use and I'll get back to you!
