Before joining in a vanpool, I used to take the bus to work about 3-4 times a week. If I miss the vanpool pickup, I can easily hop on to a bus.

Definitely saved gas and reduced my stress because I could sleep on the bus or vanpool. Plus, I didn't have deal with traffic.

I live in biggish city (but really, the whole city is a suburb) 30 miles south of Seattle and I have never used public transportation the whole time I've lived here. I've only ridden on a city bus three times, and that was when I lived in LA!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Do you work in Seattle? I think that's the only reason I've taken the bus. I live 25 miles south of Seattle but I work in Seattle, so it's either a 60 min drive or the bus or carpool. The bus does take longer but its not so bad. When I lived on the east coast, I lived in the suburbs and my work was about 45 minutes away but not in a big city, so taking the bus wouldn't have worked. Though, I did have the ability to use the train to get to work, but I never did.

I usually walk lo to daycare and then take the subway home (I wah most of the time) so on daycare days(3 days/week), I take the subway 2x/day. It's 2 subway stops, or 1.2 miles each way, so a longish walk but I find it really annoying to take the stroller on the subway. And then sometimes bus or subway on weekends depending on what we're doing.

Never! I mean, very rarely we will hop on the train if we are in the city for something, but we both have vehicles and drive everywhere day to day.

I go into my office four days a week, and each of those days I ride the bus.

Suburbs and never.

Gross, never.

And I say that in a "my anxiety would make me physically ill if I ever got on a bus or train again" kind of way.

Never, but that's because I live in a suburb and public transportation is kind of a joke in this area. When I lived in Spain I used the metro daily, and did the same when visiting east coast cities in the U.S., and other countries abroad that have awesome public transportation/ subway systems. I wish we had better public transportation on the west coast.

Never - my city (and I use that term loosely, population is 10,000 people) doesn't have public transportation. I used to take the train and bus back and forth to university when I was younger but now it is sooo much more convenient to drive when traveling

Boston - but I work in the 'burbs, so I drive daily. I take the T when we're going somewhere when it would be impossible or expensive to park or if there's a parking ban because of snow. Or if I want to go out with friends and drink, I usually take the T into town and get a cab home (it's been a reeeaaally long time for this scenario).

subway 3-4 times a week

Daily during the weekdays. I live in North Texas. Public transit isn't accessible everywhere so driving is still very common/more likely.

Like 5 times a year haha!

I commute to work on the train, so 5 round-trips a week. Plus we always use public transit if we are going to events on weekends where parking will be spotty--sporting events, concerts, festivals/farmers' markets, etc. Much easier to navigate that way.

Apart from the fact that it is more convenient, I like to use public transit because:
(1) My city can have pretty bad air quality in the winter, so I like to do what I can to help.
(2) It's free! My employer subsidizes public transit--all I have to do is tap my badge when I get on the train or bus. Plus if I parked at my workplace, they would charge me nearly $100/month (I work at a University so parking is at a premium!). There are less-expensive lots I could park in, but then I'd have to hop on a shuttle to get to my office, so it seems a little pointless when the (free) train drops me off right in front.
(3) We are a 1-car family, and my husband's schedule is more erratic than mine, so it makes sense for him to be the one to use the car. Since I work regular business hours, it's easier for me to be the train-commuter.
(4) Reading/relaxing time--I like being able to chill out and have that 45 minutes of reading time before I get home. I read so many books and I feel a lot more relaxed when I get home!

There are some downsides--if I drove to work, my commute would be 10-15 minutes, but since I use public transit it's closer to 45-60. It is also a long, uphill walk to my house from the train station. On days when it's approaching 100 degrees it can be killer!!!

But overall the pros outweigh the cons, so I will continue to commute this way for the foreseeable future.

Train to work anytime I'm in the office, which is about 2-3 days/week depending on the week.

I'm a full time student; I take the bus everyday. DH takes the bus to work, he prefers it over driving. Now that I'm used to public transport, I prefer it as well.

Never. The public transportation isn't convenient at all where I live, so everyone drives everywhere. I do live within walking distance of a grocery store, a Target and some restaurants, so I do walk sometimes instead of driving.

Just a few times a year when I go into the city. We're out in a rural area.
