I throw mine out every 1-2 weeks (depending on how gnarly it starts to look).
What about you?

Hmmm...I use a washcloth and I wash it when it gets grody or when I can smell it.

Probably not often enough. We use one of those sponge wand things and I usually don't realize I need to change it until the sucker is falling off the handle.
I do bleach out my normal sponges every once in awhile.

Whever it gets gross and smelly. I just bought a new sponge holder with more ventilation with the hopes that it will keep it fresh a bit longer.

@eupenmalmody: I have a sponge holder too! It has suction cups and you can attach it to the sink!

Ohhh, not nearly enough as we're supposed to. Maybe like, every 2-3 months? Not good.

I don't know. It's generally a judgment call as to whether or not it looks gross or old.

I use a wash cloth, and wash it about once a week. We have a dishwasher, so I don't really use it except to wash the counters off.
I have heard that to kill the germs in your sponge though, you dampen it, roll it loosely in a paper towel and microwave it. Its supposed to kill the bacteria and "clean" it.

I throw it in the dishwasher to sanitize it every time I run it. That keeps it from stinking a little longer, so I toss them maybe every 3 weeks?
grape / 83 posts
@Boogs - We do that too. They don't come out brand new or anything, but at least it seems cleaner, so I don't feel like I'm just smearing the germs around on the countertop.

wow, every week or 2. that's often. i'm probably like @autumnlove haha. about every 2 months when the sponge looks gross. or maybe longer. i tend to use the dishwasher more often now so.....
i heard you could microwave the sponge for 2 minutes and it'll kill the bacteria. i tried that once. it was interesting. i recommend doing it while it's wet.

I use a rag and change it every time I wash dishes.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
@hola abejita: Yup and it always smells better, too!
@tequiero21: I've done the microwave trick, it does work well, too.

After a month
@tequiero21 I use the microwave trick, only I put it in a bowl of lemon water and zap it for 2-3 minutes.

@boogs - re: dishwasher, just make sure the sponge part is facing DOWN. lol. i did it once and the sponge part (not the coarse side) facing up and it was soaking wet when i took it out.
@stbhismrs - great idea! i'll try that one day. when i get around to it. haha.

Once a month, but in the meantime I like to NUKE it in the microwave for 3 minutes to kill some of the bacteria in between purchases.

I put mine through the washing machine or dish washer every couple of days and then change it when it gets yucky.
grapefruit / 4056 posts
We use a rag and change it out (throw the old one in the laundry basket) every couple days. Sponges scare me because they are just bacteria growing machines!

I cook, so my husband washes the dishes. I pretty much throw it out when it looks gross to me, so at least once a month (otherwise it would probably grow legs and walk away on its own). He's pretty good about rinsing dishes right away and putting the dishes into the dishwasher, so we don't use it super often.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Every month or two usually. Or when I notice it getting grungy... MIL crochets our sponges and gives us an ample supply of them!
nectarine / 2433 posts
Oh wow... I guess probably not often enough. We mostly use the dishwasher so we probably only throw the sponge out about once every month or so.
I will have to give the microwave trick a try, never heard of that before
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
I have no idea how often, just when it gets icky and the scrubby side isn't scrubby anymore it gets pitched and I'll pull a new one from the drawer
persimmon / 1341 posts
Oh man, I'm not even close to a get germaphobe but I cannot handle dirty sponges/dishrags. I just can't. The rag gets changed daily or every other day.
