I didn't have a lovey that I can recall but my cousin had one that went with her to college.
Is there a certain point that you would wean your child off a lovey? Or would you just let it be no matter the age?

If it stays in their bed and they aren't carrying it around then any age!

I had my lovey (a ratty old blanket in my case) until kindergarten. My LO is 3 and is totally obsessed with her Lamby, and I could totally see him going to college with her.

I can't really picture myself weaning my kid off their lovey or taking it away from them, but I would probably put limits on when/where they can have it. Like "nope, you can not bring it to this wedding we're going to!" But at home and especially for bedtime, sure, they can probably keep it for as long as they want.
My older brother convinced me to throw my lovey away when I was little!! My mom rescued it from the trash in case I wanted it back, but I apparently never asked for it, so she eventually threw it away again.

Ummmmm I slept with the same stuffed bear from the time I was a newborn until I moved in with my husband lol. It wasn't like I HAD to have it, of course (I didn't take it to sleepovers in elementary school or anything), but I liked it. So why not?

I still have mine... I don't take it with me anywhere, obviously, but it's in my bedroom!

I slept with mine until I moved in with my husband. Now it sits in my sock drawer. I don't think there's an issue unless they can't be separated and want to take it with them everywhere.

It's never too old to have one. I slept with a bear until my husband came along.

my mom and I were recently talking about this - my grandmother forced her blanket away from her around 11-12 and my Mom said she cried for days/weeks. and still grumbles about it, ha. I still have my blankets - my girls snuggle them!

I don't think I would ever take one away all together.
That being said - my 3 year old knows that her burp cloth that serves as her lovey stays in her room or in the car if a trip is during night / nap time. She knows that she can always go to her room to "rest" with her lovey if she needs that comfort.

@mrsrain: So glad I'm not alone! My parents used to joke that I would take it with me to college. I'm like, "HA, I showed you!" or something....lol.

@MrsSCB: Me too.
I still have mine. He sits on the bed. I occasionally use him to cover my head when my husband watches TV. He does not leave our room, but I do let my toddler play with him. My husband is totally cool with it.
Hi, I'm Avivoca, and at 30 years old I still sleep with a teddy bear when my husband is gone.

@Mae: LOL glad I'm not alone. My stuffed bear stayed in my bed until I was 14 or 15!

I hope this post didn't come off as judgemental! Now that I think of it, I got a stuffed dolphin when I was 12 and slept with it in the crook of my arm until I was packing up for college. And I definitely see that it might only become a problem if it's taken out of the house and has the potential to be lost.

I think when they start at preschool they are too old to take the lovey with them but maybe having it in bed is ok. My mum took mine away when I was about 4 ans I remember wanting it back but eventually moving on. My dad gave it back to me when I got married 3 ywars ago! Haha

I had a cabbage patch doll I slept with till I went to college. But I was so used to holding something I slept with a small pillow instead.
The doll is on a shelf in dd's room another with dh's bear.

I'll never take away DD's loveys, and I don't have a problem with her bringing them in the car (but not into stores, restaurants, etc). My parents told me that my lovey, a ratty old baby blanket, fell apart in the wash when I was 4 or 5. It was pretty traumatic for me, and even though I eventually "got over it," I never forgot it. There aren't many parenting decisions my parents made that I disagree with, but that was definitely one. Plus they lied, the blankie didn't die in the wash...they actually still have it.

I still have my baby blanket. I sleep with it every night. Its starting to fall apart and I'm getting really nervous.

I still have mine! My grandma made the blanket for me and I do not want to throw it away. I don't sleep with it but I do keep it in a drawer next to my bed.
LO is obsessed with her A&A swaddle and needs it to fall asleep. She thankfully doesn't take it out of the house.

They can always have a lovey. Even as an adult, I sleep with a soft little blanket.

For sleeping, they can have them as long as they want. We also take them when we travel. Luckily, neither of my LOs are interested in taking their lovies out of the house on a day to day basis.

I got rid of my blankie when we got married
My personal feeling is after age 5 it needs to stay at home or in the bed. My son is obsessed with his angel dear and he's 3.5. It stays home or in the car though he does have one in his backpack for school for if he needs it.

@kitty: a lot of the kids in my daughter's preschool brought a lovey during the adjustment period - they're all between 3 and 4.5 years. I was surprised but relieved, since DD is very attached to her Doggie. She takes him some days, but he has to stay in her backpack.
I'm trying to keep DD's lovey as a toy that doesn't leave the house (that had always been the rule before), but as DD1 gets used to drop off classes and being on her own, I've relented a bit. dD2 doesn't really ask to bring hers out.

My lovey is a huge blanket my grandma made me when I was born. I just woke up from a bed that has my lovey on top of our comforter. I'm 32.
Eta we try to limit ds' a+a security blankets to sleep time only or when he's sick.

I slept with my teddy bear until I moved out to go to college. It is still sitting in my old room at my parents' house.

I still have mine. It's a blue blanket that my great grandmother made for me before I was born.

For sleep, not worried about it. For outside, I'm hoping my dd will stop taking her doggy to school by 3.5...but since starting school and having a new baby she has become very attached to it!

Never! I still have my stuffed dog. He's not in the bed but in our closet. DS is obsessed with his puppy. I think it's cute.
