I know it's more about size but I want to know how old your lo was when you moved them out of the infant seat. Also, did anyone move their lo from the infant seat immediately to a forward facing seat?

He was around 7 months. He still fits in it, but it was a constant struggle to get him into it, and he was getting kind of cramped so we decided to go ahead and move him.
Our pedi told us to wait until he was at least 20# AND a year old before we turned him around, but 2 years old would be better. DH is really eager to turn him around so we can interact with him though.

At three months, she's too heavy to be lugging around in the infant seat. We have her rear facing in the convertible with the infant insert now.

He was almost a year old. I wanted to get my money's worth and he still safely fit into it, though we stopped carrying him in it around 6/7 months.
He's rear-facing in a convertible at 16 months (22 lbs) now.

If we can get her past a year in her infant seat, we'll probably move her from that to forward facing directly. This is mainly due to space. Being very long legged, we can't seem to find a convertible seat that'll rear face without having to move the front seats up. And with carsickness being a trait in our family... neither of us can stand to be 'squished' up to the dashboard, or ride in the back. So we'll see what happens. There are some tall genes in our families so she may not make it to a year in her infant seat...

We are going to transition around the time B turns 1 maybe. He falls asleep in the car and it's easier not to wake him if he can stay sleeping in his infant car seat.

She was almost 6 months old, and is in a rear facing seat now.

We switched him into the convertible car seat shortly after his first birthday. He was 22 lbs and 30 inches in length.

We put her in a convertible seat just after her first birthday, but we still use her infant seat and she's 18 months old. We have it in my dh's commuter "just in case" well I've been driving that the past few days and she is miserable in it! So tempted to go buy another convertible because I can't stand the screaming!

We moved P at 11 months b/c she was getting too tall for it (she's 1/2 inch less than the limit). She's now in a rear facing Combi & will stay rear-facing for a looooooong time!

We just moved a couple of weeks ago at almost 11 months. But we still have the infant base in our car because I often have friends with babies carpool with us. LO fits in both seats.

He's coming to the end of his infant seat. I'd say within the next month or so - he'll be 9 months & we'll be going to rear facing until 2yrs or 40pounds.

@LazyLightning: my super tall baby was out of hers at her 9 month appointment because she was 30 inches (height limit in snugride30). Thankfully we have a big sedan and with her in the middle we can all fit comfortably in the front seat. So we'll try to stay rear facing as long as possible.

@bpcmarj: Yeah I really doubt we'll make it a year in the infant seat. I haven't had her yet but she's already measuring 'large' and we got a small infant seat too (snugride22). So, whatever we need to do to keep her safe of course... if the convertible seat has to rear face, we'll make it work. I have trouble seeing how we could put it in the middle of either of our cars though - seems like it'd still interfere with the seatbacks. We'll see though, maybe there is more room back there than I think. We both drive small SUVs.

Here's a list of the current guidelines if anyone is interested!: http://www.healthychildren.org/english/safety-prevention/on-the-go/pages/car-safety-seats-information-for-families.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token

We have the graco snug ride 35 and are moving to the britax advocate at ~7.5 months, 18-19 lbs, 28-29 inches. We'll still use the bucket seat for travel til 1 yr if she legally fits it.

I couldn't vote!
We switched him to a convertible seat at 5.5 months because we gave our infant seat to my nephew. My LO could still fit in an infant seat now (according to the guidelines). He is 13 months and we plan to keep him rear-facing until at least 2.

@highwire: Ok so... I knew the guideline was 2 years... but isn't the law still 1 year?
Honestly I'm waiting for the studies to come out in a few years citing hip and knee problems in toddlers related to being crammed in a backwards car seat when they're much too tall for it. But isn't that everything these days? It's 'safer' until it's not.
(I'm not denying it isn't safer in a crash. I just know I wouldn't want to ride like that, knees to chin. Nor is it safe for mom to be jammed up against the steering wheel like a sardine I suppose.)

@LazyLightning: It depends on the laws in your particular state.

@highwire: ah - ours is one of the laxest ones because there's basically no traffic or interstates/freeways. lol

It's important to look at the height and weight requirements on the seats, and use those as a determination of whether your kid should be rear facing or not.
In Sweden, where they have some of the longest rear facing periods in the world, the seats are designed in a way that allow the hips and legs to not be scrunched up.

@LazyLightning: I was actually able to move my front seat further back with the convertible seat rear facing than where it was positioned with the infant seat and I drive a Mazda 3, so a tiny car. There are lots of seats out there that are designed to fit into smaller vehicles.
We moved E at 9 months in my car and 10 months in DH's car. He was getting pretty near the height limit of our snugride 30 and he was too heavy for me to carry in the seat. I want to keep him rear facing until he reaches the limits of our seat, so 40lbs.

@kiddosc: really interesting! Good to know. I bought a small infant seat but the convertibles all look HUUUUUGE to me!

My oldest was one year old when we switched him (and kept him rear facing until he was 3). My youngest came home from the hospital in a convertible seat and it still rear facing in it at 15 months.

We moved DD to a convertible car seat when she was 9.5 months old. We were moving and storing a bunch of stuff, so it made sense to store the infant car seat and just go to the convertible.

I'm in the minority but J is still in his bucket seat and he will be 14 mos next week. His seat caps at 35 lbs (he is barely 20 lbs) and 30" (he is 28"). We tried to transition awhile ago but he hated it so we've been putting it off.

LO was 13 months when she got put into a rear-facing convertible seat. At 19 month, we turned it to forward-facing.

We never used an infant seat, just a convertible car seat- I don't know any one that used an infant seat. By guidelines they can be turned around to front facing at 8kgs (I think that's about 17.5lbs) as that is usually around 6 months or so. DD is 7 months and not yet 8kgs so is still rear facing. We faced DS forward at 8 kgs.
I am in Australia, so the laws are a lot different. By the guidelines on my car seat it can be rear faced until 12 kgs (26.5lbs or so) and then must be forward facing. DS is 13.5kg at 2 years 7 months and I can't imagine him being rear facing when he was 12kg!

LO is 2.5 months and already too heavy for me to carry him in his infant seat. We got a Maxi Cosi Mico (22 lbs) and he weighs about 15 lbs. I kind of regret getting that infant seat! Should've just gone with the convertible from the start.

We just did last week at 9.5 months. More that the bucket seat/baby combo was getting way too heavy to transfer from car to car than that he truly outgrew it.

We bought a "big girl" carseat for DD a few weeks ago, but we've been too lazy to replace her infant seat. At almost 10 months, she still fits in it, but a little more leg room would be nice.
The new seat we bought fits all the way up to 55 lbs, backwards facing.

We moved her into the britax advocate around the 11th month. She still fits into the Chico key fit fine but we had the advocate ready so thought we would just transition her

We moved our first out of his infant seat around 5 months. He was no longer comfortable due to his reflux. He is still RFing at over 2 years old and will be for another 3 years (or until he reaches the limits on his Radian).
We moved our second out of his when he was around 6 months because he, too, was no longer comfortable. He screamed wherever we went. He's still RFing and will be for many years more.
