I would guilt him into it and turn in the waterworks if necessary... Bike riding in NYC is dangerous and he should definitely be wearing a helmet!! Maybe talk about setting a good example for your Lo?

Your LO is getting older and he needs to be her example for bike safety. Really he is a role model for any LO that sees him on his bike.

Helmets ARE sexy. And give him lots of hugs and kisses when he puts it on. (This works for mine)

Tell him he needs to *ahem* in a cup because you want more of his babies and without a helmet you aren't so sure of his safe return.

Helmets aren't meant to be cool. Who is he trying to impress anyway? But, Mrs. Jazz IS impressed with a helmet.

Give him a pick to put in his back pocket so his beard and don't suffer from helmet hair.

I banned DH from biking sans helmet. When we first started dating he did it all the time, even after multiple drinks!!! Final straw was when he got hit by a man with a van while biking in Prospect Heights. He didn't have a helmet on and the only thing that saved him was the fact that he was wearing a backpack and so when he was flung through the air, the force shoved the backpack upwards and he landed with his head on it.

I told him that I would have to end the relationship if he didn't wear a helmet going forward and so now he does. He barely bikes these days though

Show him statistics on deaths with bicycle accidents. I guilted dh into wearing one because I went to school with someone killed because she wasn't wearing a helmet.

I didn't have a helmet and went for a ride around the neighborhood a few years back. A car was approaching from behind, and I started to freak out. I ran into the curb and fell down. My head hit the sidewalk, and thank goodness my glasses broke my fall. I scraped the side of my cheek, and I would have been in worse condition if my glasses weren't there. I went to the store the next day and bought myself a helmet.

I was riding with a friend and a car was making a left hand turn and went straight into us. I don't know that there's anything we could have done to avoid it since it happened so quick and it was completely his fault, he just didn't look before he turned and we had the right of way (we didn't have a stop sign we were just going straight). My friend cracked the guys windshield with her helmet covered head and I bounced off the side of the car and hit the ground with my head. Her helmet was wrecked but her head thankfully was absolutely fine. My helmet was also cracked but no head injuries. She was sore for a couple days and had some really banged up knees and I had a broken finger. There'd be some long lasting injuries injuries if we weren't wearing helmets.

@mrsjazz: MY DH always thinks the same thing when I up the coverage. (I've only done it twice.) But I talk about it all the time. Its a pretty effective way to get him in line. Hahah... Please know I'm half joking here...

It's probably easiest to bring LO into the conversation. It's really hard to instill good habits with our children if we're not following the same rules. Your LO will be riding bikes/scooters in no time and if they see you not wearing a helmut then they won't either.

This used to be a problem with my husband, but since I got pregnant he's been a lot better about the helmet. He bought one that is more stylish than most, which helps.

I think having an open honest conversation about why you want him to wear it is the best way to go. Honestly, I don't like wearing helmets because they are not comfortable and look dorky. But I also like not being brain dead, so there's that...

Man, just tell him to do it. Last summer a car side-swept me while I was in the properly designated bike lane. My head hit the pavement hard enough to crack my helmet. If I wasn't wearing one it would have had serious consequences. I would just tell him it's not an optional thing.

Even if you do everything right, it can be EXTREMELY difficult to collect damages in the case of getting hit by a car.

Maybe show your husband the posts? It just isn't worth the risk to ride without a helmet! (I don't know if Mac's husband was wearing one or not)
