I am unhappy in my current apartment in NYC bc my immature neighbor in their 40's thinks it's fine to play loud bass music for hours on end. I've complained to my management company, but all they tell me is that they have a right to music and unless it's after 11 pm there's nothing they can do. Suffice to say, we're trying to move when our lease is up in January. I'm due in February with my first child and I don't know how I can find a quiet home for myself and baby. Any ideas for thos who live in the NYC area about how to find a home that's quiet in a crazy city like NYC?!

Maybe try a smaller building so that you have less neighbors? We've always lived in brownstones so noisy neighbors haven't been too much of a problem. Of course the problem with brownstones is there is no elevator, so it's tough with a baby unless you're on the first floor.

Check out 101 West End Ave. It's a condo but my friend lives there with a baby and has had no issues.

I'm sure you can try to stack the odds by going with certain buildings, but I hate to say there's a little bit of luck of the draw. You can't control who your neighbors are- unfortunately...

Tribeca and Battery Park City are incredibly kid-friendly. Lots of young families here.

Check out the Upper West Side. We live in a building built no more than ten years ago... it's built so well you can never hear neighbors (unless you're in the hallway outside their door or something, but from our own apt, we never hear a thing). The construction's great.
Amenities: elevator, doorman, bike room, gym & playroom in the building and a 3-4 playgrounds within the immediate area. Three preschools within 5 short blocks. My DD lives, plays, and goes to school with all her friends. It's like a college campus for babies/toddlers
Check out the West 60s. The West End building mentioned above is great. I also think you can get more space for your money in the W. 90s. There are a ton of mommy groups and baby activities there too.

I lived on the UWS for 6 years, I picked a loud street by accident...you see, 72nd is the two way cross street that was always busy, so a lot of traffic went to 74th street, and then they'd turn and go to 72nd to cross the park.

@Looch - I lived around there, too, and it was way too noisy. I lived at 67th and Broadway, in a condo on the 40th floor, and you could hear every single fire truck wailing up and down the avenues for miles.
So that is why I suggested over at West End.

Yes the area by Riverside Park South (W.60th - 72nd) is quiet. It has really developed to be family-friendly over the past few years. I do feel it's like a little suburb in the city. The con is the long walk to a subway. Some buildings have a free shuttle in the morning. There's also crosstown buses... the M72 that goes to the river or M66 that goes to West End. Just walk around the area and see the noise level. When I walk DD to school it's nice there even isn't that much car traffic or foot traffic like other crazy streets (the more inland you go).

Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village (14th - 23rd streets, 1st ave to ave C) is very quiet and SO family friendly! The buildings are concrete and I almost never hear my neighbors, and you're surrounded by parks and open space - no roads run through the complex - it's a little oasis in the city!
