Our babe is due next month (ah!) and we live in Canada, so it will still be pretty cold, and probably snowing knowing how this winter has been!
How do we keep the little peanut cozy even just leaving the hospital assuming it's a chilly day? What is safe to wear in car-seat? We have one of those JJ Cole bundle things, but then I read they aren't the safest. What did you do?

I use the 7 am enfant sack, which is similar to the JJ cole one you bought.

It has worked well for us in this awful Chicago winter. But, you can always just put blankets on top of the car seat.

I bought a JJ Cole shower cap thing to go over the car seat. It was awesome.

We used a JJ cole bundle me, and she was pretty cozy in that! She only went from inside hospital lobby, 30ft or so into the warm car. She was wearing a warm hat, onesie with the hands flipped over!
She was an Oct baby and it was certainly cold enough. We were out in the stroller pretty early on, and while she was in the carseat while hooked in the stroller we definitely had her in a one piece snow suit.
I know there are the ones that elastic over the outside of the carseat with the window pocket thing, but they still didn't seem warm enough to me. I felt totally comfortable and safe using the bundle me with her!

@swedishfish: We have the same cover as @swedishfish. We also put a fleece jacket and winter hat on him.

I have the same shower cap style cover as @swedishfish: and it works well. If it's really cold I put a blanket underneath the cover, on top of baby, tucked in around her sides after she is buckled in.
I use the regular bunting when we are going out with the car seat in the stroller because I do feel like its warmer and cozier, but I would not have bought both. I happened to receive the bunting as a Hand me down.

The BundleMes are advised against. The shower cap style covers are definitely warm enough - I would add a blanket and cap underneath.

I'm also in Canada...her chicco keyfit magic came with a boot, then we just bundle her up with blankets, put a hat on, and close the canopy. She is always toasty warm!

Ditto to the shower cap style. With a hat and a preheated car it is never an issue. For walks we use the bassinet on the stroller and put him in a snowsuit with a hat and then add blanket layers if needed.

I'm also in Canada - and LO was born early December last year. We just used blankets, hats, etc.. Please use the shower cap style bundle me and not the other kind!
For the stroller, we had a bassinet, so we laid her on a blanket, in a fleece snowsuit or bunting, then layered blankets over top. She was toasty!

We used the same cover as @swedishfish: it's safer than the bundle me (I had registered for one of those but I returned it) and she always seemed cozy in there. I think sometimes I put an extra blanket underneath if it was really cold.

We do the same as @Foodnerd81: , shower cap style jj cole cover with a blanket tucked in underneath.
Next winter we'll probably get a regular bundle me type thing for the stroller so I don't have to worry about a heavy winter coat with the carseat.

We use a Bundleme. I had no idea they weren't safe - the box says they are crash tested.

We're in New England. I put a fleece coat (not thick) over her outfit then a hat and the hood of the fleece coat. pull the arms of the coat over her hands. Then I strap her in and tuck a nice warm blanket over her and over the straps. I have a carseat cover that I put down on the walk to/from the car to block wind. We always warm the car up for her so she isn't actually out in the cold for very long.

@Mrs. Champagne: Which JJ cole do you have? The one that goes under the straps or the 'shower cap' style? The shower cap ones are no problem, but most carseat manufacturers advised against anything that could compress between the baby and the seat. DD was born in March too, we just did blankets over her, made sure she had a hat on and called it a day. Get your DH to warm up the car and pull up to the door to get you

We have one of those 'shower cap' style covers. They go over top of the carseat and have a little hole for baby's face to peek through. So we buckled her in, tucked a blanket around her, and then pulled the cover over top. She was toasty warm!

@daniellemybelle: I never knew until I read about it on HB. I see people use the regular ones all the time, but once I read about it, I just couldn't. Same thing for coats and carseats, for that matter-- I never knew until HB.

Thanks all! We do have the one that goes in behind the baby and our midwife said we probably shouldn't use it. I saw something online that showed how to cut the back out though.. so maybe we will do that! We have the Keyfit and it did come with a boot thing, so maybe that will be enough with a blanket on top of him? Friggen Canada weather...

I have the same problem. I got (1) JJ Cole shower cap style cover for the infant car seat (2) a Zutano Cozie Elf Romper and (3) I will bring a couple of blankets to put over him under the cover. I think that should keep him warm for the trip home from the hospital.

We also use the shower cap style cover. With a thin A&A blanket and a hat LO is usually nice and warm.

The bundle mes that go behind the baby are NOT safe--anything that goes between the baby and the carseat compromises the safety of the carseat. The shower cap style ones are good, or just use blankets and warm the car before you put the baby in it. A few minutes of cold air is ok!

We would strap the baby in, tuck a blanket over his body/legs and use the shower cap version from JJ Cole

I'm quite a bit further south (Kentucky), but we've been putting on a fleece coat with a hood, a crocheted car seat blanket, and bundling a fleece blanket on top. If it's especially windy, we will canopy the fleece blanket (doubled up) while we are outside. She's always toasty warm!

We used a nice thick blanket and covered him and also used a car seat canopy (the thicker kind) to put over whenever we walked outside. And always, always put a little hat on for extra warmth. The bundle me just didn't work with the Peg Perego car seats! I think I gave ours away b/c it was so awkward to use.
