My SIL sent me this really interesting article, which is appropriate as DH and I are struggling to narrow our lists. There is so much pressure to come up with a name we like but aren't going to regret!
What do you guys think?

This is amazing! I have never hear of a Yaretzi!
lol @ F is for old people, lol

So interesting! And it kind of looks like Alexander might be a fad!

That was really interesting! My name is not Jennifer but I have one of those "name fad" names--kind of a bummer that it'll eventually be an "old lady name."

Stacy was a fad name...it's one reason I actually picked it. Because everyone knows it, but it's not common for babies. Both the boys are timeless, though.

@Dandelion: That's what I thought too, but looking at in Voyager, it's clearly surged recently and looks like it might be on it's way back down!
And my next baby's name is DEFINITELY a fad, haha. Oh well!

This was really interesting! I never realized some names are really tied to a specific region of the US!
@Adira: @Dandelion: My husband is an Alexander and I think it's timeless too!

@Adira: @twodoghouse: I always think that if I can come up with a famous person from ancient history with a name, it's timeless, lol

I LOVED reading this. Thanks for posting. My favorite section title was "Genders being dicks". I may have laughed outloud at my desk.

HAHA this is so interesting. I love the "old people" names and the fact that Frank & Elizabeth were once popular for the oppsoite gender...Can you imagine meeting a male Elizabeth or a female Frank?? haha

@Adira: Alexander is timeless and not a fad. So much history with that name!

Funny article! I see "my" future name for a DD on there...I hope it doesn't get too popular before I ever have a chance to use it! :o/

I love name trends and things like this- but it does make it even harder to choose bc you overthink things even more!
We totally fall into the "great grandmothers names" category. But it was never super important that her name be totally different, just not top ten (Dh and I both have very popular names for our generation, especially him. One of those go by your last name because even name last initial is too common).

@TheSwissWifeStyle: I loved the name Jack for years and years, and now it's so popular (apparently everyone of y generation also loved it). Sounds bad with our last name anyway but I understand your fear.

@Shutterbug: Not YET, but it's only a matter of time until it starts falling!!

@LuLu Mom: I looove Frankie for a little girl NN - I'd go with Francesca for the full name though. But a big part of the reason I love it is the NN Frankie.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: If you like a name, then use it! Don't worry about fads and stuff.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: @Dandelion: exactly! Fads come and go, names you love are important for you!

Interesting article. I think it is sort of impossible to pick a girl's name that is always timeless though. Some choices for boys NEVER go out of style (joseph, william, etc). But girls have definite extreme peaks and valleys for all of the names.
Especially right now when a lot of "timeless" names are "trendy" I think there should be another category. Example, sophia. Yes it is suuuuper popular right now, but its been on the charts basically forever. This is in stark contrast to a name like Madison that came out of absolutely nowhere and skyrocketed. IMO Madison is a "fad name" and Sophia is a "timeless name" that happens to be popular.
I suppose this difference matters to me because I do like a lot of the top 20 names but I don't think he's correct in calling them fads because although they are peaking in popularity right now, they've been around forever and will continue to be around forever.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mae: Ahh, based on your explanation, Alexander truly IS timeless, even though it had a huge surge in popularity in recent years!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Adira: I mean… it is just my opinion! And a biased one at that since my preference lies heavily with those names I'd classify as "timeless but popular"! I just don't feel it is fair to lump Sophia/Emma/Jacob/William type names together with Jayden/Aiden/Madison/Addison type names and call them all a fad because they are totally different IMO.

@rachiecakes: That is true, I forgot about Frankie for a girl that's not uncommon! But straight up "frank" is strange to me! Just like George for a girl but Georgia/Georgina is common.

Interesting article! I have an uncommon name and always thought I would want the same for my children. I love biblical and timeless names for boys and a lot of those are popular right now. So popularity isn't as important to me as I thought it would be.
ETA: name meaning is the most important to me. I don't want my kids name to mean killer or something like that.

@MamaMoose: Based on the voyager wizard we did good! Though apparently our spelling wasn't always the most common!

Great article, I love the science behind names! We are currently knee deep in names, it's harder the second time around finding something that fits our style, works well with his brother's name, and makes us both happy.

I'm kind of obsessed with Name Voyager and I love seeing all these charts!!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Mae: I totally agree with you about timeless but popular. Charlotte is another that comes to mind. It's recently shot up in the charts but I think it's definitely a timeless name.
@Adira: Alexander is definitely not a fad name! Timeless for sure.

I'm glad you all found it as interesting as I did!
I had to re-read the section on Elizabeth being a boy/George as a girl name a couple times, haha. I thought they were going to go with Georgia George or Joan for John, but nope!

@Leialou: name meaning is super important to us, too!
@Mae: @Adira: another thing to keep in mind is that these charts don't really go back very far, relatively speaking. Alexander has been around for a very, very long time (Alexander the Great, anyone?), and so have names like William, Julia, Catherine, Mary, etc. Truly "timeless" names go back much farther than just the 1880s or 1890s. It doesn't make them better, necessarily, but it also doesn't mean that just because they may have recently surged in popularity again that they are trendy.
Again, it doesn't make much of a difference to me, but I agree-Alexander is timeless!

@lawbee11: I love our name. I think we did GREAT When she was born my brother asked me if we were spelling it with a 'y' or an 'ie'. I said 'y' and he said "good, we wouldn't want her to end up dancing on a pole". Ummm..... thanks bro.

Loved this. It is pretty much every thought that went through my head when we named our LO.

@MamaMoose: My brother (who's in college) asked why I was naming her after a drug
