So, I breastfeed but have to go out of town for work for three days and I won't have enough pumped milk to last the whole time. I went to buy some formula and I left empty-handed because I was overwhelmed with all the choices. Does it matter what kind I get? Are they all basically the same? Help!

@Jennibenni: I would ask your pediatrician what they would recommend. Sometimes your ped might have samples. Oh, there's formula for supplementation. I wonder if that would work since you also still pump.

If you just need a little I would buy the ready to feed nursettes. Otherwise just go with something that's in your budget. Organic if it's important to you. Gentle/sensitive if your baby is prone to gas. The liquid concentrates and ready to feed are pricier but a nicer texture and easier. The powders are less expensive.

You can't go wrong with Similac or Enfamil - our hospital used Enfamil, so that's what we used. Assuming your baby doesn't have digestive issues, just go for the regular infant kind. If you're only planning to use it for these three days you're out of town, I'd probably get the ready-made kind for convenience - but if cost is an issue, the powder is almost exactly the same (just less convenient because you need to mix.)

I went with Gerber Good Start gentle ready to feed cartons when we started supplementing because my ped told me it was the most broken down and gentle of the non-specialized formulas. It also had a bit less sugar, if I recall. DS did fine on it. We slowly switched to sensitive formulas and then regular formulas to ramp up his lactose intake, and then toddler formula before milk. But he had reflux and all sorts of random issues.

@raspberries: I agree with all of this with the exception that we use Similac (because that's what the hospital with LO1 used. Our hospital with LO2 let you pick your brand.)
Ready to feed is amazing! I wish we could afford it all the time.

I did TONS of research on formula before I had my son incase I had to supplement. They are definitely not all the same and a lot of them have some scary stuff in them. If you're interested in organic formula Baby's Only is a great choice for US brands. Sometimes you can find the good UK brands in the US but they're hard to come by. Hole and HiPP are good ones if you can get them.
Eta baby's only can be used for infants under 1 yr. it says on the can that its for babies over 1 but that's because the company wants to encourage breastfeeding. I have a friend who has been using it since her daughter was born with no issues. Also, it is made with dairy so if your LO has dairy sensitivities, be sure to get the dairy free version!

We did Gerber Gentle too. It wasn't my first choice; I would've tried to pick something non-GMO, organic, etc. But we had a few cans from the pediatrician, and after DD did well on that, I just didn't want to switch/stop if that's working.

Goodstart was recommended by the LCs to me. Ive used it with both my Dds with good success. They said there was no need to pay for the more expensive version with Omegas so I just get the basic version.
I use the liquid concentrate , I find it mixes better than the powder. When traveling I use the ready to feeds.

I used Similac for Supplementation to start, but I was then told by pediatrican that had a high sugar content (trying to make it taste more like breast milk) so I switched to the knockoff Similac and it worked great. with DD1 we used Gerber Gentle and liked it, but DD2 didn't.

When I supplemented we started with the free samples we got in the mail, lol.
But at ten months when she weaned we bought Good Start, and loved it. Actually, we may have used the Walmart knockoff of Good Start, am I remembering correctly? She's almost 4, so it's been awhile...
