Option two! I wouldn't buy the pricier stuff until you know everything you've gotten and are able to budget/plan it out. And you can often get better deals on diapers/wipes/formula than what they have available at the baby stores.

I agree about waiting until after the other showers. I would also at some point add those pricier items to a registry (even if it is after the showers are over) so that you can get your completion discount in case you can't find a better deal on them.

Beyond that I would probably use them to stock up on any necessities before baby comes and then wait until I actually need something to use the rest-- so for example I wouldn't run out and buy an exersaucer before baby is born with the gift cards in case I realize I won't want one or can get a used or hand me down version. I feel like people come out of the woodwork with that stuff sometimes!

We used ours to buy things off the registry that we put there for the completion discount (our stroller/travel system) and a few other little things we needed.

Even if you get everything from your registry, I guarantee you either you or your husband will be in store frantically throwing things in a cart because no matter how well you plan, things come up. So I'd wait until after the birth and evaluate then.

I'd wait until after Baby comes. There is so much stuff that you buy beforehand that you don't need right away and so much stuff that you don't realise that you need.

Save until you are done with showers. I would then use to stock up on diapers and get any remaining item you for sure NEED. If you have a lot, I would save a few for the first couple months.
