Get a mesh lingerie wash bag. Keep it in/next to your hamper and put all socks in the bag as soon as they come off feet. Zip bag when you're putting it in the wash, then when it comes out of the dryer all socks are in the bag and just have to be matched!

I try really hard to get multiples of the exact same ones so we don't have fifty different types- but for some absurd reason multi packs are almost always variety packs! I did this for my husband and I and ii try to at least get a handful of each set for my daughter and it really helps.

We have an odd socks box in our laundry room. After a load of laundry the odd ones go in the box and every month or so I pull it out and match them up.

Now the problem of losing them before they GET to the laundry...that's another story!

Pull back the rubber ring that seals the washer door. We found a ton of molding baby socks in there when that seal tore and we had to replace it!! We use a mesh bag now too!

I do the mesh bag and go one step further to safety pin them together. No more matching required. They come off the feet, get pinned and go in the bag

When we cleaned the washing machine filter (which I previously didn't even know existed!), we found several socks of all sizes. It can definitely eat socks.

@HappyBaker: It depends on what kind of washer you have. On our top loader (I forget the brand), it was located inside the agitator. On our Samsung front loader, it is located behind a little door in the bottom corner. Your manual should state filter information.

I was going to say your machine might actually be eating them - I had a friend whose machine stopped working and they found a lot of socks in some hose - but others have beaten me to it! I try to pair mine up before washing, I find it helps.
