I have the XT gate and it would go perfectly around that area.

A quick and maybe temporary solution might just be to drape a comforter over the area. That's what my mom did with her brick hearth when we visited when DS was young.

We just put up a fireplace gate at the bottom of our stairs.
We didn't use all the panels and the have additional if needed.
