I asked my DH this question this morning and his response was "Um...not really." Which is basically "yes", right? grrrrrr... At least he was honest?

I don't think anyone ever wins from this question! I never ask, I feel like I can tell myself if I look fat
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Mine would be totally honest. Tell me to do a sit test to show the pants are too tight. He is not a fan of my clothes shrinking ie me gaining weight, so he tells me when my clothes are unflattering.
coconut / 8299 posts
@Mrs.Someone: LOL! I can usually tell if I look fat in certain clothing but I was wearing dark cords and it looked ok in the mirror but I wasn't sure how it looked in the sunlight.
bananas / 9229 posts
He would be honest if I asked. That being said, if I feel like I've lost weight or toned up, I'll ask him that too.
nectarine / 2667 posts
Once, a long time ago, he said "Who doesn't look fat sometimes?" He was trying to be funny. It was not. And *then* he followed up with "If you think you're fat, we can go exercise together." He's always been shockingly honest (on the flip side, though, I get no empty compliments )
honeydew / 7586 posts
He would say no without even looking at me first. Same goes with, "Does this look stupid?"
honeydew / 7909 posts
He always responds with "no, you look beautiful!" even though I know I can't ALWAYS look as good as he thinks.
coconut / 8299 posts
@JoyfulKiwi: LOL!! It's a true statement but not what I would want to hear! And I agree with your "empty compliments" statement. My DH is brutally honest so when he does compliment me, I know he means it.
pear / 1609 posts
Mine would also say no before he even looked.
The other day I asked him if my shirt made me look pregnant. He said "unfortunately not". Someone has baby fever!
pomelo / 5509 posts
He always says no, but I like to think if I did look fat - in clothes or out of them - he'd be honest. He will usually say that if I feel fat, I could exercise more, but that I don't look fat.
nectarine / 2163 posts
he would laugh at me for asking, but he would give an honest answer too
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
he'll usually say something like "you never look fat," which is sweet but not helpful, haha. I usually will ask if something looks too tight, or if it looks okay in general, since that gets a more useful response. though sometimes he'll say i look great without even looking at me, grrr

My husband knows that any response to that question is entering in to dangerous territory
But when it comes to my fitness goals he can be pretty brutal though!
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
He would say "no, the fat makes you look fat." It's a joke though that we've always said to each other.
coconut / 8299 posts
@Mrs. Polish: Cute!! My DH and I have a running joke where I say "I'm hungry!" and he goes "Hi, Hungry!!"
It gets old pretty fast though (...I'm tired...I'm sleepy....I'm cold....).
honeydew / 7463 posts
@Mrs. Polish: We have the same joke! But then he would be serious. If something isn't flattering on me, he'd tell me (solicited or not). Some women might think he's being a jerk. But I appreciate the honesty. Ultimately I make the decision myself, sometimes I just don't agree with him and think I look awesome This just happened last week, he said a pair of pants I got weren't flattering because they draw attention to my problem area. But I still liked them, so I disregarded his comment.

@SweetiePie: I tell dh all the time that he's lucky he married me because no one else would think he's funny.
I just never ask how something looks. If he likes it he'll say so, if he doesn't iI don't really care.
persimmon / 1128 posts
If it did not: "Not at all" with a look that screams, "You're crazy."
If it did: "I think you look better in __________."
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
He has generally learned not to answer that question.
@banana: Ugh DH does the same stupid joke. I'm hungry. Hi, Hungry, I'm Brian. It's so annoying! Yet he thinks it's sooooooooo funny.
ETA: Lately he's started saying things like, yeah, that looks good, especially considering you had a baby two months ago. I'm like, seriously, you can stop with that looks good. Thanks.

"Fat makes you look fat, and you're not fat."
If I want an honest answer I ask if what I'm wearing is flattering on me, and he'll give me an honest yes or no answer.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@rahlyrah: Yep, this is my husband exactly. And when I say, "Dude, you aren't even looking at me. Try again." Then he'd look at me and say the same exact thing, no matter what.
I'm okay with it. lol
pomelo / 5257 posts
Probably like this:
ETA: Skip to 36 seconds for the good part
(Sorry, couldn't help myself haha!)
pear / 1639 posts
He would respond with some sarcastic statement..."yeahhhh you look huge" while rolling his eyes. Basically he got sick of me asking when he thinks I look good.
I guess it works, I rarely make negative comments or questions about myself to him anymore!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
He would say YES! P-H-A-T (pretty hawt and tempting a la Chris Tucker in Rush Hour)
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
Followed up with the *Do you understand the words that are comin outta my mouth?* (Again, a la Chris Tucker in Rush Hour)
coconut / 8279 posts
He's pretty honest. He'll say they look kinda tight or clingy, meaning I look chunky. At least he's honest.
nectarine / 2765 posts
He usually answers "which a ph baby!" Heh.
Mine is completely honest, which while I may not always like the answer, I appreciate the honestly. Usually the answer is that something isn't flattering on me.
honeydew / 7444 posts
If they do he'll say, "they arent the most FLATTERING pants..."
But usually he'll say, "don't be stupid."
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I'll usually ask "does this/do I look ok" but it's more so a whole outfit look than just the pants or shirt. If I have to ask if I look fat in something, it's probably too small and I already know the answer
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
I don't ask - I know the pants make me look fat. But, thankfully he loves me in all my chubby glory. Nowadays he just gets excited when the pants I'm wearing aren't for yoga.
pomegranate / 3577 posts
He tells me I don't, then he offers to take the baby if I want to workout, lol. To be fair, I'm pretty vocal about this extra 20 pounds.
@MrsSCB: Ha! Now I want to see hug...and rolllllll.
pomegranate / 3980 posts
I never ever ask that because I know that even if it did he would never have the heart to tell me the truth. Besides I feel fat in everything so I don't go looking for confirmation lol!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@Espion: @Mrs. Polish: I've watched way too much Friends in my life -- I feel like I can think of a reference for everything, haha. I'm just glad there are other people who understand
pomelo / 5509 posts
@MrsSCB: I too firmly believe there's a Friends reference for every life situation!
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
He'd be honest, but he also knows that I would never ask unless I wanted the truth.
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Haha, I know better than to ask that question! But when I was feeling insecure postpartum after DD 1, he was so kind and always reminded me how beautiful I was, and that my body had just made a human.
