She would probably smile and say something like "look mommy, another (insert toy name here)"! And would be excited about having 2 of them lol.

@mediagirl: Yea I totally agree with the above, she'd probably exclaim something about having it already (but not in a negative way) and then I'd probably jump in and remind her how fun it is / was to play with, and she'd be excited / want to play with the new one right away.

"Look mama!! It's just like my other 'X' I have!" But she'd be excited and still say thank you to the gifter.

@mediagirl: When Xander doesn't respond right away, I just to jump in to control the situation. In your situation, I probably would've said something like "Oh yay! Another ____! Now you and I can both play with them at the same time!" Depending on what it is, of course. With Xander, I'd just be all "You can give your old one to Logan and now you have a BRAND NEW ONE! YAY!"

I think he would say he already had one but act excited anyways.

Mine would probably say "I have this already" I would hope we could at least get a thank you out of her

@mediagirl: Look on the bright side, at least she didn't throw a tantrum, scream around, throw the item on the floor, call it a piece of junk, etc.

She expressed her feelings, I can't fault the girl for that.

My mom once gave her a book we already had and she said 'ohhh another one! I can keep this one in the bathroom!' I really don't think your lo's reaction is unusual though. 3yos are emotional little creatures. She was probably so excited about getting a present and then at that particular moment couldn't deal with the disappointment of getting a duplicate. I think you did the right thing explaining how to be grateful. If I were the gifter I wouldn't be offended at all, just feel bad that I got something she already had.

@mediagirl: lest you think everyone has an incredibly gracious child, while my kid is excited for all presents, she almost always asks "where are the rest of my presents" or says something like "I want more presents now" or my favorite, shakes empty gift bags upside down to make sure that's really all that was in there, when she is done opening, so yeah. Kids.

It could go two ways.
Sometimes she is excited by gifts and would say "yay another xxx"
OR
she could get angry (she's sometimes overwhelmed with gift giving and gets upset) in which case she'll storm into the kitchen and throw said gift into the garbage with a good deal of drama. true story.

@mediagirl: I also want to chime in and say that though my kid is not spoiled or always showered in gifts, she does always say, "What you bring for me?" when people come over and throws a fit if I don't buy her something at Starbucks when we go to Target.

This happened at his birthday. He loudly announced "oh I have one like this!" But he was totally happy to have it again!

Would probably say that he had it already, but his excitement level about having two would depend what it was.

@oliviaoblivia: omg, I've never heard of a kid reacting this way, but it's totally understandable! I struggle to explain to DH and others why I truly don't like getting gifts frequently, it's so overwhelming to me!

It's unpredictable how my LO would react. I can see it being okay or ugly. Either way I'd try to jump in and remind her that we should be thankful anytime someone gives us something. Gifts are hard.

She got two of the same pony for her 3rd birthday. She was excited to see another one, said thank you.

Mine is 2.5 and loves seeing things she already has so I'm sure she'd be really excited. She likes to go into bookstores and point out all the books that we already have at home. She is weird though.

My 3.5 year old would say "I have this" or a form of that sentence.

Last Sunday, someone gave her a small Olaf figurine. She doesn't have it. But she has an Olaf lego piece and she told the guy, "no thank you. I already have this." I had to jump in and explain to her that she doesn't have this piece and look, this one comes with sunglasses.
