@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: If he was caught with the knife and made to hand it in to the guard, then I somewhat understand the punishment. If he went to the game, saw the guard and said "Hey, why don't you hold onto my hunting knife while I am in here", then I don't think it makes sense for him to be punished.

@bpcmarj: I was assuming it was voluntary/preemptive, not that he was made to turn it over. If he was "caught" then that changes things for me. Though I still would want to know more before feeling like the consequence was appropriate.

I read the story and apparently the kid had been setting up a hunting site prior to the game, didn't change his clothing to go to the game and forgot about the pocketknife. He saw the signs that said no weapons and turned his knife into the security guard.

The boy is also facing expulsion since the school has a rule that if a student brings a weapon to school or a school-related function they will be expelled for a year.

I think the student was trying to do the right thing. He could have just kept the knife on him during the game and no one would've known but he was trying to abide by the no weapons policy. But I do understand the school's policy.

I'd be interested in hearing the school's side, since so far the only report of this is coming from the 16 year old. But regardless, I do think it's fair - I understand why the kid's a bit mad, but there are rules (as there should be) at nearly every school about having weapons (including knives) at school or school events. I read the news article, and the student said he just forgot he had the knife on him when he left for the game...well, I bet he won't forget next time. 10 days might be a bit much, but technically they could have expelled him, so compared to that it seems they were on the more lenient side considering the circumstances. It's a serious rule and I can understand why the school would feel that they can't make exceptions to it for any reason.

I see why people feel it's wrong because it tells kids not to be honest...but the other way of looking at it is that it's telling kids not to forget they have a weapon on them and bring it to school! If they were hunting and forgot they had a gun on them, would that be okay? I wouldn't be comfortable sending my kid to a school that let things like that slide.
