I see 6-7 year olds watching it all the time in the hospital all the time and I think it's pretty inappropriate for them. 10 is better, but still early, in my opinion.

I think they're great books but might be a touch complex for a 10yo.... has she read the Percy Jackson books? The strong female lead in that series carries a bow and arrow (I'm almost positive.. It's been a while since I read them), and they would be great for a kiddo around her age. Greek mythology + YA action + demigod powers = Win in my book!

It depends on the kid, really. I had some of my 5th graders read it, and it was perfect for some of them, and others were quite disturbed. I would check with her mom or her teacher- they should have a pretty good understanding of her maturity and her reading level when it comes to this sort of thing.

Awesome choice for a gift, though!

I think the complexity is totally fine for a 10yo, but the violence could be a bit much. Personally, at 10 I would have read and loved them but I was also reading John Grisham et al at 10 so I'm not the best example I guess.

@locavore_mama: I agree with PPs it depends on her and her parents. I was an elementary librarian when the series first came out, and I had a ton of 5th graders really into it (they had to put it on hold from the middle schools and do an interlibrary loan). Their parents didn't mind at all.

But my own sister wouldn't let my niece read them till she was in Middle School.

The reading level most likely wouldn't be a problem but the content is pretty violent (more so than that movie).

I loved the books, but yeah, kids kills other kids for sport. I wouldn't let my 10 yr old niece read it.

So great that she is into reading.

I agree re too much violence in a book as a gift (although I read American Psycho in jr high, go figure). Around that age I really enjoyed The Giver, Wrinkle In Time series, and the Hobbit -- all similar adventure type books. I also agree Narnia would be a good series if she hasn't already read it. My cousin is really into the Percy Jakson series and is about that age.

@locavore_mama: is there a novelization of the animated movie Brave? or Mulan (did she have a bow or a sword?).

ETA: Or maybe you could find a biography of a real woman archer! Maybe an olympian?

@locavore_mama: yes but the girl is another main character pretty much. I have girls who love the books!

@locavore_mama: she would also like the lost heroes, which is a spin-off of the Percy Jackson books and the main character is a girl.
