When my doctor went to circumcise DS in the hospital, he found that he has a mild hypospadias and we were referred to a specialist. We have our appointment this coming weekend to have it checked out and talk about the surgery. My husband is really worried about the surgery, and as the time gets closer to go to the appointment, I am starting to get anxious, too. Has anyone here had a son with this? If so, did you go through with the surgery? What was the recovery like? It would be great to hear experiences from other moms and not scary google articles!

@soyjoy222: Hi! My son had mild/moderate hypospadias. They immediately noticed it at birth, and we met with a pediatric urologist when he was a few months old. They recommended surgery, as he wouldn't have been able to stand to pee, and may have had fertility issues as an adult if left untreated. He had surgery to correct it at 9 months old.
I was SO nervous for him to have the surgery. Seriously, I cried everytime I thought about it. But the procedure went so well. It took them about 5 hours to correct it. We were able to be with him the minute he woke up. He was back to rolling around and showed no signs of discomfort within a few days. Honestly, it's much worse on the parent! Diaper changes are painful to look at initially, but he really didn't seem to mind too much (Motrin helped a lot with that!).
He is almost 1 year post-op, and you'd never know he had surgery. He is starting to pee in the potty, and has no issues. We go back for our one year visit soon, and hopefully they confirm my feelings that all is well!

They thought our son had it and referred us to a specialist. When we went to the specialist he basically laughed, told us the doctors who said that were idiots and that we should be worried that they are practicing
so yeah. Ours ended up not having it.Has his been looked at by the specialist at all yet? How old is your LO?

I had a similar experience as LittleBit. The dr. who was to perform the circumcision at the hospital thought my son had hypospadia but our pediatrician office did not - 3 or 4 of their drs checked it out and they all thought my son was OK. Since we wanted to move forward with the circumcision as soon as possible, we scheduled an appointment with the pediatric urologist who will circumcise a baby boy less than 10 lbs and less than a month old. He told us it was a very mild hypospadia and surgery was not necessary and was able to circumcise our son when he was 3 weeks old.

@soyjoy222: Depends on where the hypospadias is located. If it is fully on the head of the penis, then it doesn't necessarily need to be repaired. He will still "pee/shoot" straight. If it is right at the margin of the shaft and the head of the penis, then it is generally repaired. If it is anywhere below that, then it definitely should be repaired.
And just like @Littlebit: and @autumnleaves:, pediatricians/OBs are awesome, but sometimes they don't know what they are looking at. So it is always best to have it looked at by a pediatric urologist.
If he needs it repaired, most will usually wait until your baby is at least 6 months old. He may require a catheter for 7 to 10 days, and it will take a couple solid weeks to heal up. Risks of the procedure increase the lower the opening. The opening can be anywhere from the tip of the penis to all the way below the scrotum.
