All infant car seats are rear facing.
Buy the one that fits in your car the best and has the best ratings out of those that fit.
Buy the smallest weight rating since most kids grow out of them way before they reach the weight and they suck to carry around.

I agree with @venice4504 about buying the smallest weight rating for an infant car seat. I purchased the Graco Snugride 35, which can accommodate for a baby up to 35lbs. My LO is less than 5 percentile in weight, and we will switch to a convertible car seat before he ever reaches 35lbs. The Snugride 35 is heavier, and I hate carrying it back and forth, especially as my LO gets bigger.

I second Venice's theory about getting a lightweight seat. We did so much research on seats, and ended up with the Chicco. I love it because its lighter than the Graco, and my LO is so comfortable in it. From a safety perspecitve all are fairly equal so when the salespeople tell you one is better than the other, disregard. All new seats have the five point harness system so you should be okay. The "best" seats based on review etc seem to be the Peg, Britax and Chicco but go with one that fits your need and budget!

I got a graco snugride 30 and like it. I'm glad I didn't get the lowest weight one since that one only goes up to 22 lbs. At 7 months she's over 18 lb and really long, I feel like she's quickly outgrowing even this bigger seat but they're supposed to stay rear facing for awhile.

We're getting the Chicco Keyfit 30. It gets great reviews and fits well in both of our cars (including DH's tiny 2-door).

Oh thanks guys and keep the responses coming!.. and I had no idea there were all rear facing I guess I got the infant seat confused with the toddler seat lol

We have a Britax Marathon 70. We can rearface in it until she is two and then she can be in it until 70 lbs. It's roomie but not huge and we really like it.

We're getting the Britax Marathon because of the safety ratings.
@mamadopt: if you get a convertible carseat to start, what type of stroller did you use for the baby when your LO was an infant?
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
We got the Peg Perego SIP 30/30. My LO's in the 98th% for height so we switched to a convertible when she was around 7 months old. We have the Britax Advocate 70cs. LOve iT.
Both are rear and forward facing.

@mediagirl: We used the Britax Chaperone with the BOB. Neither website says they are compatible, but they completely are!

We went with the Britax Chaperone for an infant seat, then the Marathon for the convertable, based on safety ratings and the super cute cow pattern that I'm in love with!

@skibobrown: Im glad you mentioned this! I am registering for that car seat and I have a 2 door civic!

Britax Chaperone and the Britax Marathon here. We have only used the chaperone so far. Very happy with the price (it was free, since they were running a promo when we purchased the Britax B Ready Stroller)

I wish I skipped the bucket, but as a first time mom, I wanted to make sure I made my life as easy as possible!
I really think the "right" answer depends on lifestyle. We rarely take the car anywhere, so it would have made more sense to skip the bucket and go right to a convertible that can be rear facing and forward facing. The amount of times that DS actually fell asleep in the car and was still sleeping by the time we got to our apartment...I can count on one hand.

@looch: We fly (way too much) with our daughter, and the infant seat has been a godsend because it's so easy to haul around. She will probably take 2 more trips in it because she's well under the 30 lb weight limit. If you travel a lot an infant seat is a wonderful thing!

@JustlikeHeaven: Don't get me wrong, it's not spacious with the car seat in there, but at least it fits, which is more than I can say of some other car seats.

mamadopt: I just got back from a flight with our son and we used a super light Cosco Scenera. It cost me $30 when diapers.com was having a sale. I prefer to buy stuff that has a longer life than a bucket. That Scenera will last us way longer (as a travel seat).

Which infant car seat do you have? - Britax Chaperone (Silver)
Are you happy with the purchase? - Yes, it is pretty large, doesn't fit into a lot of booths at restaurants because its too wide but since we have a bigger baby we are happy we got the bigger size
How much did it cost? - I think they are like $180 but I got it free with my stroller ($400 for B-Ready and carseat)
Is it rear facing? - Yes.
We also bought a convertible seat (can rear and front face) that we started to use instead of buying a second base.

@Thehistoryofus: how did you get a car seat for free? I'm intrigued.

We had the Chicco Keyfit. It was awesome. Loved that thing. I know some people go for a convertible straight away, but I can't imagine not being able to take him out of the car in the seat when he was little and snoozing all the time.
At just shy of six months, we switched to the Britax Marathon. It is also awesome. But I sure miss the convenience of the Chicco!

We had a Chicco Keyfit 30. It was great. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it seems to make my son hotter than he might be in another seat so if you have really hot summers, this isn't the carseat for you.
We just switched to the Recaro Proride for a convertible seat and are very happy with that purchase too.

We have the Britax Chaperone also purchased during Britax's free car seat with purchase of B-Ready stroller. Our little girl hasn't arrived yet (38 weeks!) but it made sense for us since we drive to most places we go to.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@mediagirl: Last spring Britax had their "free Ride" event. If you bought the b-ready stroller ($400) you could get a car seat, second stroller seat or bassinet for free.
We were lookin at the chicco travel system but it would have been $300 for stroller and car seat. The Brita offered a lot more options so the extra $100 was well worth it for us toget the features we wanted.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@ElisaT: I'm sure you'll love it. I loved that the stroller was basically a snap and go frame while she was little and stayed in her infant seat. So easy to run into stores and such.
persimmon / 1472 posts
@thehistoryofus: I'm excited! That snap-and-go like feature is what got us considering it along with all the other cool features (reversible toddler seat, big storage basket, etc.). Then when they had the "free ride" event, I couldn't say no!
@mediagirl: I bought mine during the fall "free ride" event. Maybe they will have another one this coming spring? I stumbled upon the sale on the day it started when I was on Britax's website. =)

We have the Orbit G2 car seat. It's rear-facing. I used it at a previous nanny job and love it!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@ElisaT: yea the reversible seat, adjustable handle bar, nicer wheels, and the option of making it a double were big selling points for us.
honeydew / 7968 posts
we put the chicco keyfit on our registry - the guy we talked to at buybuybaby was explaining all the car seats to us. he said it's easy to install the base and easy to take out and put back in the car. easy to take out the baby, etc.

Update! We ended up getting a Graco Alano travel system, it comes with a graco snugride car seat. This stroller is pretty lighteweight compared to other travel systems and isnt too bulky when folded down. It was on sale at the store we visited so we only paid $132 for the pair!
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
@Mrsbells: Wow, good deal! I know people always say bad things about travel systems, but we have a chico and I love ours, bulky stroller and all.
squash / 13199 posts
yeah The stroller didnt seem that bulky to me, I was expecting much worse. I'm happy with the price we paid!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mrsbells: Excellent! Nice deal!!
We decided to register for the Britax Marathon and the Britax B-Agile Stroller. As much as I'd love the more expensive versions of both, these seem more than capable.
For an infant seat, we're getting my husband's best friend's infant seat. Their daughter was born 6 months ago, so she'll be out of it by the time we need it. Even if she's not, she will fit just fine in the convertable until we can get it from him. We'll get one of those snap and go strollers for the infant car seat. Cheap and easy.
@tequiero21: I think Buy Buy Baby is one of the greatest stores ever. The people there are so knowledgeable and there is always someone to help. I love that!
persimmon / 1472 posts
@mrsbells: Nice deal on the travel system! My close girlfriend has a Chicco travel system and she loves it. =)
@mediagirl: The B-Agile stroller was my first choice pick in stroller until I found all the neat features of the B-Ready (adjustable handles, able to accommodate second child, etc.). Sometimes I wonder if I should have stuck with my original choice since it is 10 lbs lighter. Oh well!
