Nope. I'm right there with you. I chalk much of it up to (1) they had adorable British accents, and (2) crappy reception of early television sets. That, and they had some catchy tunes.

Eh. I'm not a big fan either. I'm guessing it's because they were the first "real" boy band + they were British.
Girls go crazy for boy bands and Brits.

I don't know... I can't hear a Beatles song without singing along though!! So I'm a fan : )

I'm not a huge fan but I did see Paul in concert at Citifield and he was pretty awesome.

They were brilliant song writers... they could churn out catchy, pop melodies like no one else could -- they probably have the most impressive catalog of music compositions of all time. And their works sometimes symbolized social movements of the day, so that gave them added momentum. I think they've proven to be timeless because they're generally upbeat and happy songs. That and the boy band thing, too, probably.
I am a fan of the melodies, they're happy, catchy tunes!

I don't understand it either. I think the only reason I love them so much is because that was all the music my Mum listened to at home until I was 13 or so. So I guess I enjoy them because of conditioning? Lol.
And it's gotta have something to do with the catchy tunes...

I'm as lost as you are!
They have some songs I enjoy, but I only learned to appreciate them after seeing Across the Universe.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps still annoys the crap out of me.

ha! i was never a fan either. But my dad owns their first record (gift he got at his 16th bday)

They're credited with everything from inventing the style of heavy metal to boy bands so they were pretty diverse with their writing. They were socially aware and wrote songs identifying with the times. They also changed the presentation of music and were the first to hold a large scale concert and their 'music films' ushered in the era of music videos. So they had a pretty big impact on the music industry.

I like them.
But I don't quite get why everybody thought New Kids on the Block and NSYNC were so awesome....

*gasps* Haha. J/k. That's what my DH would be doing. I get schooled by him all the time in music. I'll get his answer when I get home.

You can see a really interesting reflection of the era by listening to the Beatles. From the sugary sweet pop of the early years (1963) to the more complex exploratory works of Yellow Submarine, Abby Road and Let it Be, you can follow the ethos of the entirety of the 60's.
It helps me understand what our parents era went through.
Watch the movie Backbeat to get a really interesting set of insights into the earliest days of the Beatles and that might help.
It is also pretty amazing that they had two singer songwriters in both John and Paul.
They are worth another listen within the context of their time, if only for historical perspective

My appreciation and total infatuation with The Beatles blossomed when my DH and I listened to Abbey Road on vinyl together. The music is just incredible in every sense of the word. The fact that that they are lyrically as powerful as they are musically is extremely rare. They were the first artists to write and perform their own music themselves that got that big. Elvis, Frank Sinatra etc didnt. They also pushed the recording limits and if you know anything about recording equipment during the 60s it is sheer magic what they did.
Listen to Abbey road, it is very powerful.

Something- Written by George Harrison
Blackbird- about civil rights in the 60s
Yesterday- Written by Paul Mccartney when he was like 21 years old. Incredible for his age.
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The end
Elenor Rigby
A day in the life- written seperately by John and Paul when they began feuding.
I could go on for ages lol
These arent all on Abbey Road but are some of my favorites.

hey Jude is another great one. very sentimental, Paul wrote it for Johns son "Jules" but changed the name to not offend him. Its about his son accepting yoko ono as his stepmom and the struggles the child went through as a result of his dads relationship with yoko.

Blasphemy!! The Beatles revolutionized music for all of the reasons PPs have said. They crossed genre borders as well. Whatever type of music you love, the Beatles wrote and sang a song in it.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
Listen to Norwegian Wood too. I think it was one of the first songs I fell in love with.
Actually, the whole 1967-1970 album was my favorite in high school, but I love rubber soul too.

@highwire: I don't mean to blaspheme! Can you YouTube me some great songs by the Beatles? The only song I really like is Yesterday. Hey Jude and Let It Be are ok to me, but I think I'm missing the broader context of why the songs are considered amazing.
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
@Witz: THIS! They were good at music--and catchy, too, but the big thing was their music. I know NOTHING about music, reading music, or understanding music, but the harmonies, the different patterns, the complexity of the actual music (not the singing)... they were really something!

I was never exposed to much of The Beatles before I met Papa Y, but he's a huge fan and I've grown to admire them, too. We included a lot of acoustic Beatles songs in our wedding, and believe it or not, Baby Y calms down instantly when we play him/sing him "Here Comes the Sun."
persimmon / 1255 posts
Are you kidding me? The sheer breadth of music they turned out was incredible. Each and every one a catchy tune - not like today's artists who either sing songs other people write or write songs that sound exactly same as the last one they sang. *sigh*
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Red: I agree that there are a bunch of today's artists whose music all sounds the same, but there are also a bunch of today's artists who have unique and powerful sounds all their own!
I would love to better understand why so many people love the Beatles. If you have any specific songs that I should listen to, I would love to hear them! I'm going to create a Beatles playlist and listen to it over and over...

@mrbee: Their songs aren't as "produced" as today's music, which I actually love and the variety of styles they sang was incredible. Their songs always put me in a good mood. In fact, you just reminded me how much I love Beatles and that I need to download some so that I can expose LO to some of the classics. Here are some of my favorites.

@Nskillet: I think you just listed most of my favourite songs.
And Penny Lane of course
@mrbee: "Because" is another good one to listen to, IMO
ETA "Don't Let me Down" is a good one too!

That's the thing... Identifying specific songs to explain what makes the Beatles awesome is... hard. Blackbird is lyrically and musically beautiful. Come Together is like musical chocolate to me. Penny Lane, She's Leaving Home, Lovely Rita, Lady Madonna, Ob-la-di, etc, are essentially short stories. Here Comes the Sun always makes me feel better musically and lyrically, and I've sung it through tears a fair few times. Honey Pie and Octopus' Garden make me giggle. Julia lowers my pulse every time I listen to it (it's not my favorite of theirs.) Revolution 1 is not only a nice, relaxed classic-ish rock song, but the lyrics are also great (do NOT confuse this with Revolution 9, which is... bizarre. Just don't listen to it.) When I'm 64 is, to me, a very sweet love song, and All Together always makes me cheerful. Many of their songs are perfect for little kids, whether happy silly songs or lullabies. Basically, they have something for every mood - except intractable anger. And considering that that's the only emotion I'm opposed to, there's ALWAYS a Beatles song that appeals.
Mind you, they also liked mocking their fans/producers, etc... Gnik Nus? Only a Northern Song? Cover of Abbey Road? Which only makes me like them more.

I could repeat a lot of what's been said before me. I got hooked on the Beatles during high school - aka Beatlemania II (when the Anthologies came out).
For me, what works about them is no matter the kind of mood I'm in, they have a song that fits it. Sad? Yesterday. Frustrated? Help! Silly? Yellow Submarine.
Although there are artists out there today that are able to replicate the variety of music the Beatles created, I think the big thing is they were the FIRST. And whenever someone/something is the first, there tends to be staying power.
I also think it's amazing that after they broke up, all four went on to have successful music careers of their own - you can't say that of a lot of other musical groups. It seems that now there's one or two strong members in the group and the others are there to fill gaps. Each of the Beatles was able to stand on his own after walking away from Beatlemania.
I think I'll have to rummage through my car today and see if I can find a CD - I've now got a Beatle craving!

I'm with Mr. Bee. I don't get it. My sister loves them and I put a bunch of them on my iPhone. Slowly but surely they are all being deleted. I find that they sound the same with nearly every song and their voices just grate on my nerves. Having said that, I really love Golden Slumbers. It didn't sound like them at all the first time I heard it.

My brother was a huge fan growing up, so of course because he made me listen to them all the time I didn't like them. But I can definitely see the appeal-- they are all great vocalists, musicians, songwriters, and were so cute!

I like them, however I'm not a crazy fan like some. I sing along because it reminds me of growing up and cleaning the house with my mom on Saturday mornings.

I agree with PPs explanations and recommendations. I always say my babies will all be sung to sleep to Beatles tunes. It'll be my tribute to their genius.

@Mrs. Blue: I've definitely sung a lot of Beatles as lullabies. My older daughter's favorite is Blackbird.
