What a heart stopping moment! I would be drinking a big glass of wine while watching infant CPR videos right now. So sorry!

Oh my gosh, so, so scary
I'm sorry this happened and I hope it doesn't again. So glad he is okay though.

@spaniellove: What breathing symptoms did you notice and tell the doctors about that they were concerned about to begin with?
blogger / pomegranate / 3044 posts
Oh god how awful.
Maybe you can consider asking for a medical grade apnea alarm? The one we had alarmed after 5 seconds, and it was either electrodes or a belt around his chest. We saw a pulmonologist to get it, not GI. Based on the episode today you can ask your ped for a referral.
Good luck, I hope that doesn't happen again!

@spaniellove: So glad he is ok! If it helps, I know Babies R Us offers infant CPR courses. We did one and it was great.

I read the title of this and my heart sunk. How scary!!! What did your ped say when you told them?
So, just a thought (please don't take this the wrong way), but do you think the swaddle could have contributed? The reason I ask is because TX state laws won't allow daycare's to swaddle babies (even in the Velcro swaddles) because there is a risk of suffocating if it's too tight. I doubt that's it, but wanted to throw that out there. .

@BabyBoecksMom: That's a good question; I use the Love to Dream swaddle which is a looser zip up swaddle made of jersey fabric. So he's able to wiggle his arms around and even suck on his hands to soothe himself and he doesn't feel anything confining on his chest or legs. But there's nothing loose enough that it could cover his face, if that makes sense.

@spaniellove: I'm so glad he's okay....that sounds completely terrifying.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I did find him with spitup coming out of his mouth? So there's a remote chance that had something to do with it.

I would freak out! We have an Angelcare alarm that goes of on a semi-regular basis. So far it has all been false alarms, although she did stop breathing once while I was holding her. Her entire body stiffened up and I had to pat her a few times to get her to breathe. Her doctor said as long as it only happened once there wasn't any reason to worry. Yeah, right...

@spaniellove: wow so scary! I would definitely push for a referral to a specialist to look into this asap! Our last ped didn't take my concerns over our LO's eating seriously so I switched peds and she immediately took me seriously AND fixed the problem. A good doctor who believes you is so important.

@spaniellove: what did the doc have to say after this happened today? Hoping they are going to help you quickly!
( And in case you need a giggle to help you relax, my phone tried to ask you, "what did the fox say?"
)

@Mae: @LovelyPlum: My ped agrees that the breathing issues are related to the reflux and it really needs to be taken care of but yet again the office is not cooperating with us on expediting the referral/appointment. We need them to contact CHOP directly so J can be seen asap and have been asking for this for days now. I'm getting kind of frustrated after looking at his growth charts again and realizing that his growth dropped off after the reflux started. It's been 2 months now!

@spaniellove: dude, your child stopped breathing. They need to get a move on!! Do they know about today? I'm so sorry that they are making this harder for you than it needs to be.

Oh gosh. So scary! I hope you get all of the tests and answers you need!

@spaniellove: Wow, so glad he's ok!!! And amazing that the monitor caught this, great job!!!!
This is a random thought, but I read a while ago that they found a correlation between certain forms of hearing loss and SIDS:
http://www.seattlechildrens.org/media/press-release/2007/07/002259/
I'm sure with all the hearing tests your son has gotten they've already checked for this, but thought I'd mention it just in case!

@spaniellove: the next time anything is up just take him to the ER, then you will get admitted. Maybe you'd rather not be admitted but it's the fastest way to get everything done and see the specialists he needs. Not breathing is too scary to be afraid of an admit. However, if it is isolated and he doesn't have any more episodes, feel free to wait for the referral. Just my two cents from having been there, I never regretted going because there was true medical need and I know I would have regretted not going if something bad happened

Ah! So scary! Glad he is ok. Infant CPR is a great idea....we had to take a class before they would let us bring LO home from NICU. I actually printed out step by step instructions to remind myself how to so it and posted it up in her room and living room....I know I get really frazzled in an emergency and the reminders would help!

So scary and so glad he's ok! I hope you can get in to see the specialists soon.

@mrbee: Oh interesting...I can't figure out if they mean only right vs left or just right vs control group, but his type of hearing loss does involve the hair cells of the inner ear on both sides.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@spaniellove: I am far from an expert, so I defer to your doctors! Would be awesome if they could do this test they're talking about...

OMG. That's so scary I can't even imagine!! I'm glad you have that snuza.

Apnea for > 20 seconds warrants an admission for ALTE (apparent life threatening event), where they will coordinate GI issues, pulmonary and possibly neuro. I don't like those home monitors, but your little guy has enough random stuff that I wouldn't take any chances. Did he have any color changes?
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
That is absolutely terrifying. I'm glad you caught it and all was well and I'm so glad you're being proactive and making sure he gets the tests he needs. You're a wonderful mama!
