I know some of you are really good at reading signs but I feel like before I know it my son has pooped and I can't seem to catch it in time to take him to the potty? Am I the only one? Any tips?
He is only 21 months so we are embracing the potty right now more than full on training. We have books and dvds about it. I also have know clue when he needs to pee. I have a zillion friends with kids younger than him who have been potty trained during the day for months. What gives?

J has no signs whatsoever either. He's 28 months and though he understands what the potty is and what happens, he has no interest and I'm not pushing it. I'm waiting until he's ready.
He doesn't have to be trained until preschool anyway - which is Fall 2015. He will be 3.5

I don't know any kids that are trained during the day, and DD is 19 months old. She is showing absolutely no interest in the potty, and I'm trying to just go with the flow. Good luck!

I know when O *has* gone or is in the process because she has a poop face. but she doesn't tell me before hand. I'm hoping once she's older and has more words and understands it better, we can start then.

I waited until my LO showed signs and we used the 3 day training method at 27 months and put her in underwear. Pees clicked right away but it took 2 months for her to poop consistently in the potty! 
I think it is great that you are introducing the potty now...I think he will get the hang of it soon!

Oh, I wouldn't stress over it at all. Lorelei will announce when she needs to go but she's just as happy to pee/poop on the floor or in her trainers, so she's nowhere near being in underwear despite our previous good progress. You could try letting him go diaperless (basically EC) some to try and learn his cues if you want. We've done some EC off and on, but she really seems to like to go on the carpet. So... trainers it is. I know her cues, she just doesn't care enough for anyone to help her *do* anything with them. If he's not resistant to sitting on the potty and seems to show some readiness signs and you are trying to help him sort out the "feeling" with what to do next then some diaper free time might work really well.

Some kids just aren't ready until they are older. Mine is just starting to show signs of getting ready at 2.5, my nephews did too, but weren't truly ready until 3. Right now we are talking about it a lot and having fun wearing training pants over the diaper, taking steps toward training but just keeping it fun. Recently he recognizes that he has to poop and if he tells us, then he gets a treat. M&M's and jelly beans are a huge motivator in our house.

A tells me when she's going because she says away. She doesn't like me watching, buuuuut she has no interest whatsoever in the potty so I'm not pushing it. I don't think she's ready!

No tips, sorry! But my daughter, we did the check every hour and she peed (once) and pooped (once) in her undies and now, she pees and pops on her own, although for now, I still nap her in diapers. But she picked it up really quick. My son on the other hand, doesn't want to, even after a few mistakes, so I'm just letting him go when he wants and put him in pull ups.

My 18 month old is similar. I only know if she is pooping sometimes if I catch the poop face, but she still surprises us fairly often, and I never know if/when she needs to pee. She was slightly interested in the potty when we first got a seat for her, but she is no longer interested at all. I don't think she will be ready for a while, despite some of my ILs trying to push it already (they keep buying her underwear!).

My 23 month old has a certain walk she does when she's working on a #2. For the past month or so, she has been saying poo when she's either just done a poo or is working on one. I take her to the potty and let her sit on it for a while, but until this week, she wasn't actually doing anything it.
This week, she has been telling me poo, then taking herself to the potty and sitting on it (with her nappy still on, I take it off her once I get in there) on her own. In the last three days, she has made it to the potty twice now in time to do a poo in the potty, so it is definitely clicking for her. Today she started saying pee and taking herself to the potty but hasn't actually peed in it yet.
We aren't officially potty training yet, just getting her familiar with the concept, but if it's any consolation, we were no where near beginning potty training at 21 months, so don't stress!

That's pretty young. I would wait until there are readiness signs.

@MrsMccarthy: We are in the throes of potty training and while I think we started too early (27 months), I just can't go back. I have noticed that my son is way more aware of when he needs to pee when he is bottomless. He does a little dance and pinches his penis when he needs to go. He does the same with pants/underwear on but I usually have less time to rush him to the toilet. He is very, very good at holding in his pee though as he can go all morning (4+ hours) without peeing - even if he sits on the potty. For poop, he has a definite poop face, so as soon we see it we ask him if he needs to poop and he says yes so we sit him on the toilet. We still struggle with him communicating that he needs to go BEFORE he goes and if we want to catch him ahead of time we have to watch him like a hawk. He has a tendency to have an accident as soon as we leave the room! In retrospect, we should have waited, but like I said before, I won't go back and have him in diapers during the day because we have made slow and steady progress.
I'm also really surprised you know so many kids that are already potty trained! At daycare, my son's 2 year old class (the youngest is maybe 22 months and the oldest is 29 months), he and one other kid are the only ones who are in underwear.

My LO goes to a spot, usually behind his tent or in a corner near his crib to poop. It's become more obvious over the past month or so he's doing it. We haven't tested out pee yet. If anything, he's a cute liar when we ask whether or not he has to pee or poop. He'll tell us no, but do it. He's not reliable yet on his signs. We're introducing potty right now, but nothing more than that. My LO is 22 months old.

@cascademom: my son would do this too! He would go poo discretely and laugh and say no when we asked him if he wanted to poo. And then he would be perfectly content in a dirty diaper.
@MrsMccarthy: I'm not winniebee, but some signs of readiness are:
-being uncomfortable with a wet / dirty diaper
-being able to communicate that they are wet / dirty
-recognizing when they are peeing/pooping
-being able to hold in pee (e.g. not letting out little bits of pee throughout the day)
If you're referring to speech when you say communication, I wouldn't say that that's a prerequisite. There are many different ways to communicate that you need to go to the bathroom besides talking. My son doesn't say the word potty and definitely can't say "I have to go pee!" but he knows the sign for potty and we are going to try a picture symbol soon.
The main thing with potty training is that kids need to learn how their bodies feel when they need to pee and poo. And then they need to connect those sensations with sitting on the toilet and going to the washroom.

@MrsMccarthy: better communication, telling you he has gone or is about to go, bring able to pull down pants. My son is 25 months and I'm really following his lead here. He sometimes will tell me he has to go but I do know when he is about to take his morning constitutional and as him if he wants to use the potty. He usually says no. I think most boys are ready to be trained after 2.5, often closer to 3.

@MrsMccarthy: With B, he has recently started saying "mommy/daddy pee pee(poo poo) now." It's then a race to the toilet. He has recently hated being dirty, so he tells us before he goes, sometimes he tells us to late. B is 2 years old.

We didn't go based on feeling, we went based on timing. So we'd offer him potty time every hour or so. Eventually, he'll learn to pee on the potty and then eventually he'll learn to go to the potty before he pees. We were very hands off about it, honestly, because I didn't want to create any toileting anxiety.

@looch: That's a good idea. I think we will do that once we officially start potty training. He is just now starting to be ready, I don't want to push potty training until he's ready.

LO is 20 months old and starting to show a lot of interest in potty training and loves to sit on the potty, wipe/flush. However, she usually tells us "I potty" right after she potty's and we can always tell her poop face but it's usually in the process and she tells us immediately after "I get diaper I stinky." So I know she's figuring it out, but we aren't quite there yet.
