Yeah, ventilation would be my concern. That being said, I slept in a small walk-in closet for a few years as a toddler - I think maybe from age 3-4? I still remember it and thought it was super cool, lol. It had a giraffe painted on the wall and I think my mattress took up the whole floor. We were living in a small cottage while my dad built a house on the same property.

@MaisyMay: I would test it out by sleeping in there a week or so yourself? If the temperature is well regulated and ventilation isn't an issue, then maybe it's an option! I'd be really worried about ventilation though...

I would be worried about air and ventilation. I wouldn't risk it. I prob wouldn't get any sleep bc i would be so worried al night.

@MaisyMay: could you leave the door open after you go to bed yourselves? As long as it doesn't get hot in there, seems like it would be ok to close/mostly close the door for a few hours - especially with a fan. I agree that maybe you should try it out yourself for at least a night or two.

Apartment Therapy has a bunch of posts about closet nurseries -- just go to the main site and do a search and they should come up. I think most people remove the doors and use curtains instead, but I'd imagine if you didn't want to take the door off the hinges, you could hang a curtain behind the door. The curtain would block some light but not as much air movement during naps and nighttime, and you could close the door to hide everything the rest of the time.

I don't think it's a crazy idea at all. If you're limited on space and need the baby out of your room, it's actually a pretty clever idea.

I think it could work as long as it's well ventilated and comfortable for her. It's not like you're sticking her in the bathroom.

@MaisyMay: you also want the air to be moving in and out of the space at all times so it's not just about making sure the air is moving at certain parts of the day. I would suggest putting a vent onto the door itself so there is somewhere for air to move out of the space.

Any plans to move into a bigger place in the future? Are there no other spaces in your apartment her crib can stay?

ETA: love the idea of hanging a blackout curtain instead.

@MaisyMay: I slept in my crib in a large hall closet (with a window) for the first year of my life-- that's what happens when you're the 5th out of 6 kids!

I think leaving the door totally open would suffice. The fan on low would circulate air in and out of the closet. I assume you have a video monitor?

@MaisyMay: Sounds like you've gotten a lot of great advice. Just wanted to add my two cents. We turned our closet into a nursery, and our daughter slept in it until she was 8 months old (she outgrew that darn mini crib). It had a window and double doors, so it was a good sized little closet, and it worked out well for us! We left the door open at night and cracked it during naps. We had high ceilings and a draft window, so we weren't so concerned about circulation. On the rare hot days, the window was open and we had a fan going.
