So, I'm not sure...?
L has been biting my shoulders (or my husbands, or grandparents) when he gets picked up. It seems like he does it because he's excited?
I can't tell if this is a teething thing, or a behaviour thing, but I REALLY do not want to encourage this, but I am stumped as to how to stop it!
We don't play bite him at all, so I'm not really sure where he got this from?
Any suggestions, Please?

Aaw, E does that too - but I just put it down to teething. She goes for my face sometimes, too! I call that kisses! Maybe I'm delusional!!

@.twist.: ehhh I would just keep an eye on it. When I worked at a preschool my babies start at about 10 months and that's when they really start to get bitey.

@.twist.: M went in for a kiss today and ended up biting my face! Sometimes she will nip at shoulders when she's picked up but I always try to gently discourage the behavior. Hopefully it works better one day

J does it and he's only 6 months. I thought it was just excitement/teething

B does it, too! He's drawn blood before. I think it is mostly due to teething but our pediatrician said that we need to start "disciplining" for it now.
She said that we should try not to yell "ouch!" or squeal even though it hurts. Even though it scares them (B cries!) it is still a reaction and can reinforce the behavior. If he bites, we are supposed to firmly say, "No, we do not bite. That hurts mommy/daddy" and place him on the floor and ignore him for 30 seconds/minute.
He hasn't bit since the appointment so I don't know if it works or not!

I just stop her and say, "we don't bite mommy." Or, "we don't bite mommy, lets find sophie giraffe. .."

Our LOs are almost the exact same age. My daughter has been doing this recently, too! I just say, "No biting, please!" and put her down for a few seconds. I'll also offer a teether. I feel silly disciplining an infant, but I don't want it to become a habit. She only has three teeth, and it already hurts!

B was a biter. What worked for us:
1. Reinforcing good biting (ex: biting food)
2. We read a book called "Teeth are not for biting"
3. We reinforced teeth are for smiling
4. We taught him how to sign "help" if he got in a situation that made him angry and provoked biting
It really is a stage and the most important thing is to be consistent with your message! It will pass like all stages!

Mine does that too. I just say "no biting" firmly every single time. I figure eventually she'll get the message.
