@Mrs. Jacks: sometimes it referred to sacred rituals, and sometimes it was for meetings not tied to anything sacred. People borrowed this term a long time ago, like many other Native American words in our vocabulary.

@Happygal: yes, but my American Indian friends have told me that they find it offensive that we use it in general conversation about sign out or some other trivial event, so I've struck it from my lexicon.

@Mrs. Jacks: sorry if this is thread jack but there is a lot of talk about the football team, the Redskins being offensive. What do you think? The owner Dan Snyder says he will "never" change the name. I think Snyder should be more understanding to why people might be offended and consider changing the name.

@littlek: I get that the Redskins or Indians are now considered traditional sport team names, but I do think that they should show sensitivity to the native populations.
Stanford changed from Indians to Cardinal and I don't think it was that difficult of a switch. Our local college football team is the Utes which is our local tribe and I don't like it much, but I don't see it changing soon, sadly.

@shopaholic: You ddidn't offend me! I understand your point. I don't get offended when someone uses this term because I assume they haven't been informed otherwise. My only issue is with those that make excuses to use something when they are aware that its hurtful. And I know that wasn't you.
