Looking back, were there any signs that baby was going to make an early appearance? Lo1 came on her due date and I have a going concern (totally irrational and unfounded, surely) that this one could come early.

No. Lo#1 my water randomly broke at 37w5d. Nothing leading up to that.
#2, I started contractions and she was born at 37w2d. Nothing before that either. No losing the mucus plug, nothing either time.

Nope. My water broke completely unexpectedly at 34w5d, I didn't feel different at all before that.

My dtr was born at 37.5 weeks. No signs at the time-- I felt awesome until my water broke. However, in retrospect, there was one night about a week and a half before labor, where I had awful back pain. I was awake all night crying. At the time, I just thought I was getting big and uncomfortable, but it could have been contractions or something I think. Also, when I went in at 36 weeks, the midwife predicted that she'd see me in the hospital next because baby's head was so far down.

I had DS at 38 weeks 6 days and didn't have signs until the dr stripped my membranes. I delivered less than 48 hours later.

My son came very unexpectedly 3 weeks early. Looking back there was absolutely no signs. He hadn't dropped, no BHicks, I didn't feel anything, nothing! I had gone in to a check with my midwife and I was 1.5cm dilated and 50% effaced but she said "that could mean nothing."

Both kids started to slow down a couple days before and it took longer to get the number of kickcounts like the weeks before. For my first, the dr was a bit worried so I did a full day of nsts which came back normal, eventually, but the nurses had to use a special tool to wake her up. My water broke the next day (37w5d). For my second I also noted that he was starting to slow down. I was already being monitored a lot for other reasons and everything was normal. But he ended up coming a couple days later. (38w)

My son came at 38 weeks exactly and I had no signs at all. I was barely dilated or effaced during my check. I had lost my mucus plug a few weeks prior but otherwise the whole thing took me by surprise. I had planned to pack my hospital bag that day he was actually born so I was running around after my water broke like a crazy person throwing things into my bag!

DD came at 38+1.after a cervical check at 37+6 (I was 1-2cm and 90%)I had cramping that got progressively worse through the day/evening. I woke up with nothing at 38 weeks and went to work. As the day wore on I felt like I was coming down with as cold and the cramping came back (but not as bad as it was the day before). I decided I'd work from home the next day Since I was tired and just worn out and feeling sick. My water broke at 1 am the next day and DD was born a t 5:30 pm. Looking back if was obvious it was early labor but at the time it felt like it could have gone either way.

These answers are making me smile. I've been having "signs" since 32 weeks (was actually worried for a few weeks) - losing bits of plug, intense Braxton Hicks, back pain, baby dropping, sharp pains in pelvis. I'm 36 weeks now and being induced at 37-38 wks (health issues) - I bet I'm nowhere near ready when they try to induce!

My water broke at 39 weeks (so, not actually too early, but still before the EDD, I'd expected to go way past as a first time mom), but I had no signs before- no feeling, braxton hicks, pain, cramps, mucus plug, nothing.

Looking back, I had increased energy for about a week before each baby! And (tmi) looser stools. But better energy was the big one! And both early (36 and 35 wks) and unexpected.

With DD I was having increased BH contractions, loose bm, and increased discharge the week before she arrived. A day or so before I went into labor I had some bloody show. Went into labor naturally at 38 weeks.
To be fair, though, I had a similar experience with DS (all except bloody show), and I had to be induced at 38 weeks (hypertension). My body responded extremely well, though, so it's possible I would have gone into labor naturally that week regardless.

Nope. Lo2 came at exactly 38 weeks. I even had a doctors appt that day where I was checked and the midwife told me I was like half a cm dilated and advised me to make appoint or the next two weeks (LO1 came at 41 weeks and they said it's usually similar). contractions started at like 2in the morning and he came couple of hours later!

My water broke at 37w5d with no signs. I felt insanely uncomfortable in the days leading up to it though. To the point of moving up my maternity leave by 2 days. Other people had told me it looked like baby dropped but I didn't put much stock into it since people have all sorts of opinions on pregnant women

Ladies! The moral of this story seems to be that there were no signs (or very few!) that baby was coming early. So I guess there's nothing to wait and watch for

DS1 I had frequent contractions / preterm labor from 30w on so it was no surprise when he came at 38.
DS2 I was induced at 38 weeks for IUGR, but had had contractions in the third tri as well. I was totally surprised that at my induction I was only 2cm!

My water broke at 38 weeks, that was the first sign. Contractions started a bit after that and he was born the next day.
Looking back I irrationally nested the day before and my Grandma has always said that would happen. Like I was cleaning windowsills!

@Autumnmama79: both mine came on time but I swear I posted this exact thing in my third trimester with my second. I was super paranoid I was going to have her early. Nope- born in her due date. I had lots of Braxton hicks and contractions leading up to it, almost every night, then they would just go away after water and laying down. Once labor actually started I wasn't sure since I'd had so many contractions that week already, but it soon became very clear.

Looking back, yes there were signs. I had my son at 37 weeks 5 days. The day before he was born I had a ton of what I thought were BH contractions because we were out and about most of the day. We had dinner at my in laws and I just couldn't get comfortable. My back hurt and I had a very upset stomach. My water ended up springing a leak at 1am.

With DS, he really slowed down in movement at the end of 37 weeks. I couldn't get a full kick count and then he didn't move at all for like 12 hours at 38 weeks. I checked out fine at 38 weeks, then at 38w5d, my water just broke, no warning. No contractions at all for 24 hours, then a failed induction, then emergency C section bc of stalling and heart decels.
I'm 32 weeks with Ds2 and I'm getting paranoid about him coming early. I've been feeling nauseated and really crappy the last week or so, super tired, and uncomfortable.
I'm supposed to have an RCS and with a toddler and no local family, having an unexpected baby would be annoying so I'm hoping he stays put! He's still super active so at least there's that.

LO came at 33+1. I felt like crap for several days beforehand. I remembered that a lot of women report feeling "off" right before labor, and I specifically thought that if I were full term I would be expecting to have her soon. Some loose BM, but more just feeling achy and out of sorts. The day before I started having what I thought were just mildly painful BH's. I had BH's as frequently as every 2 minutes starting at 10 weeks, so that wasn't really noteworthy. I'd been told MANY times not to worry as long as there were no other signs of labor (water breaking, etc), even if they hurt some.
Woke up at 6 the day she was born, in enough pain I didn't want to lay back down. Posted on here asking if I should call or go in or just ignore still. Took a bath (didn't help the pain), saw blood in the water as I got out, rushed to the hospital and she was born at 10:40.

I had 0 signs. Went into labor and delivered at 36 weeks. Was lucky though and had no problems with the baby and no nicu time.

With my first LO, I had loose stool a few hours before contractions started and what I thought were minor pains. With my second LO, I woke up with some cramping and didn't think too much on it. I took a Tylenol and waited it through. I got my husband up from bed when the pain was getting worse. We still went to the bouncy house while I had contractions. It wasn't much of a heads up probably because it was a quicker labor than the first.

My daughter came 3 weeks early. I kept going into preterm labor and they were not able to stop it. I was getting tons of BH before each time, but thats it.

Looking back, I did have some minor pregnancy complications (like SCH) so maybe it was a subtle sign? They don't know what caused my PPROM and I was very lucky that I made it 6 weeks on hospital bed rest without going into labor so it wasn't so bad. Twins were born at 34 weeks and are doing well.

Weirdly, I just knew DS2 was going to come before his scheduled c-sec. I had a feeling almost my entire pregnancy.
He came a week earlier than planned. I had been having prodromal labor for two weeks, so I had a pretty good idea it was going to happen.
