...do you have a big backyard or a garage?
Totally random question, I know. Today I had to wear M to get her to nap. I told my husband it would be so nice to be able to walk somewhere with her. He said, then we would give up our garage and backyard. So, I pose the question to the Hive. Can you have both?

We have a backyard and can walk to a coffee shop! No garage though...
If I had to choose, then I personally would prefer a coffee shop over a backyard. But now that we have kids, it's a tougher choice! I do think that walking around town is good for the kids though. But then again, so is playing in the backyard!

I have a backyard (not huge though) AND a garage 
We don't live far from the center of our town, so it's about a 10 minute walk!

I have a garage and back yard. I couldn't walk to a coffee shop. I could walk up to a shopping center with a home depot, bed bath and beyond and some other things. It's about a mile from our house. But it's a busy road and while I run there no problem, I wouldn't feel comfortable walking with a stroller or a baby.

@mediagirl: We live pretty close to main street, and on our long walk to the coffee shop there are plenty of houses with backyards and garages much closer than we are.

@artbee: I always forget about small towns and main street. Now that I think about it, there are some areas near us where you can walk to shopping and have your house with garage and backyard. It's just a bit more pricey than our neighborhood.

not the answer you were looking for, but from the other side... we have a little over a quarter of an acre, and definitely can't walk to a coffee shop! honestly here in suburbia we don't even have cute little coffee shops... just starbucks.
ETA: i could walk to a dairy queen or mexican restaurant, but i don't think those are ideal for babies.

We live in a small town and have a yard and a garage! Its about a 5-10 min walk to my fave coffee shop!

@mediagirl: I guess it depends on the town, our area isn't very pricey at all. I should confess that our coffee shop is a Starbucks, lol, but there are also lots of cute local restaurants, a flea market, and always fun events going on.

we can walk to a coffee shop. we don't have a backyard, we have a garage, but we don't live in a house, we're in a 6 unit condo building. there are single family homes in our neighborhood that have both though.
i've been looking at a lot of real estate listings online and being able to walk somewhere is a requirement for me right now. we're used to being able to walk to a least a dozen bars (spoken as someone without children yet =D ), 2 grocery stores, 3 parks, and numerous other places. i'd feel stuck if i couldn't walk anywhere, i mean i could drive, but it's not the same!

Kind of. We can walk to lots of coffee shops, don't have a real back yard, just a patio, but we're in a gated community so we have the common area for grass. And we don't have a garage per se, but 2 parking spots in front of our unit. There are people with both of those in our area, it's just a lot more expensive than our place.

While we don't have a backyard or a private garage right now (we're in an apartment). Most of our neighbors have both and are about a two minute walk to three coffee shops. The walkability of Toronto is something I really love. That we could (and hopefully will shortly) have a single family detached house in a downtown location is unique and something I love.

We have a garage and a 1/2 acre lot. Dunkin Donuts is 1.7 miles away, so I guess we could walk there (along with the grocery store, Marshalls, and a bunch of other things) but I've never done it.

We have a big backyard and garage and have to drive *drive* at least 8min to the nearest coffee shop and it doesn't even have outdoor seating so I don't like it. I allllllways wanted to live closer to the city and I'm jealous of those of you who do!!
On our honeymoon in PR we had a bed and breakfast in the center of town and we walked to bread shops and cafed every morning: highlight.of.the.trip!

Our yard is about a half acre + we have a good size garage and we have a coffee shop that's less than quarter mile away and another that's a half mile away. We also have the library which is a mile away and has a cafe so we usually go there for coffee/reading. To be fair, our house is old and small! Oh and I should add that the garage isn't attached and it's so old that we use it as a shop/storage...both our cars are too tall to fit in there.

We have a small backyard/deck, a garage, and can walk to four different coffee shops. That being said, we live in a very small town, and you could walk just about anywhere. But it is possible to have both!

Used to live in a place where you could do this, and I miss it everyday! It was an older, close-in neighborhood in Columbus that had its own really lovely commercial strip with shops and cafes. But the houses still had yards and garages. It was lovely.

Nope! We live in Brooklyn and have a million coffeeshops near us, but live in an apartment building. So no backyard, no garag!

The house I grew up in had a front/back yard, garage, and was 3 blocks to coffeeshops and restaurants. We live down south now, and that doesn't seem as prevalent. Driving everywhere!

We live in a townhouse, so we have a garage but NO yard. We can walk to panera which has coffee, walmart, subway, the thrift store, the bank and a couple other businesses.
We're moving to an apartment complex where we will have no garage and no yard but be about 10 blocks from my favorite coffee shop!
The apartment complex is right on a park though. So it's kind of like having a yard.

We have it all, so to speak, but the coffee shop, while a long but walkable distance, is down a super busy road, so I'm not sure I would want to make that walk, especially with a LO.

We have both a large backyard and garage. The closest coffee shop is exactly 2 miles away. Probably not worth a 4 mile round trip unless we were really, really bored and had a lot of energy to burn.

In my old house, in Buffalo, NY, we had a garage, small backyard, and THREE coffee shops walking distance! (Of course, I use the term coffee shop loosely, two of them are dunkin' donuts). Now, in Houston, TX, we have nothing walking distance away

We have a garage and backyard, and we do have a coffee shop (several, actually) walkable, but it's a little over a mile. So, walkable if you're motivated and the weather is good!

We live within a close (under 5 minute) walk to a Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts and a local coffee shop and have a garage. We don't have a yard because we have a condo, but all the homes in our area have yards, and most also have garages. You can have both!!

@aprk: Seriously, what does the south have against sidewalks!? Drives me nuts.
I used to live in a neighborhood that had lots of lovely older homes with yards and garages. All were in walking of a wonderful commercial strip with cafes and coffee shops and other little stores. I miss that neighborhood a lot.

@aprk: Amen. We can walk a bit in our "neighborhood" (term used loosely, no sidewalks) but the main road is busy, narrow, and of course, no sidewalks, so anywhere else, we have to get in a car.

I have a huge yard and there's a starbucks right up the road. Probably take about 5-7 minutes to walk there. However, I don't live in a huge city either--under 100k.

My backyard isn't huge, but it's big enough for us. The closest coffee shop is about a 25 min walk, longer if you go through the forest and take the scenic route.

The only thing within walking distance to me is my church and the beer distributor, though there are no sidewalks. I can think of a few towns in the area that are walk able and live-able (garage, backyard) but they're all small towns laid out around the turn of the century.

Both - although it's over a mile. And by the way...you made me walk to get coffee today. We live at the top of a huge hill, so I usually drive, but i need the exercise (so does my puppy) and this post made me feel guilty : ).
I have decent sized back-yard (not large) and an attached garage.

That's so funny about sidewalks. I live in a large So Cal city and everywhere has sidewalks...EXCEPT a few streets in my neighborhood. It's really weird and annoying.
