I just found out that my insurance company will reimburse me for any breast pump I would like! I just have to submit my receipt!
So ladies, which is the best one out there??
I will be working, so a fast and efficient one is key!

Medela freestyle! I need to buy new parts for my next baby.

the medela symphony! haha just kidding (they're $1500 or something). i would choose the medela freestyle as well. the compact size and ability to move while pumping seem like great things to have. (full disclosure: i haven't used one, my insurance only covered the ameda purely yours or a manual).

@edelweiss: Holy cow, why are those so expensive?!?! I doubt my insurance company would go for that one! LOL
Looks like I will get a Medela Freestyle!

The Medela freestyle is supposed to be their top of the line under the Symphony. I had the option of choosing any pump too through my insurance but I ended getting the Pump In Style Advanced (PISA). I read a ton of reviews and had a really hard time deciding. You may want to check on spare parts availability in your area. I'm pretty happy with the PISA. I WOHM and use my pump every day. But I do have friends who have the Freestyle and they like their pump too.

My insurance only paid for a PISA at the time I had my son. It worked really well. I'm tempted to see if insurance covers them for each baby - if they do I might see if I can get a freestyle.

I had both the freestyle and a generic medela dbl electric breast pump (insurance) and I used the generic one at work. I left it there and actually preferred the pumping power vs the freestyle (which i loved for portability around the house).

My insurance only covered up to $300 so I got the PISA & am happy with it!

@marionberry: I believe that most health insurance covers one per pregnancy, because they don't recommend open systems be re-used due to sanitation issues.

I have a Medela PISA. I like well enough I just wish I could move around with. I might look into for our next one.

I personally bought my freestyle in 2011 and still love it. I have a PISA at home from insurance but don't like it at all

Well, you said ANY pump, so symphony, hands down I'm renting one now!

I have the Medela PISA and the Avent Double Electric Pump and I much prefer the Avent. Plus it's a closed system so no worrying about milk in the tubing.

I already have a Medela PISA and a Freestyle--I like the Freestyle best, but if I were getting a new one, I would totally get a Freemie!

I'm curious about the Limerick (https://limerickinc.com/Pjs_Comfort), the silicon flanges seem so much nicer than hard plastic. Plus, portable hospital grade! It's just crazy crazy expensive.

@mrsjyw: Do they still have issue with reusing a pump if you buy new tubing and pieces or sterilize your current ones? My pregnant coworker just called our insurance and it does sound like we get another pump though, so you were right!

I love my Medela personal expression better than the Pisa I used with DS!

Medela PISA.
You really aren't going to walks round and pump for many reasons...
one you need to relax while you pump to get the most milk.
two the milk will pour out if you're trying to bend around and do things.
three, you can just buy a hands free bra and wuh-la! Hands free!
Also the symphony is a preemie pump that hospitals often carry that's why it's so spendy.

Medela pisa if you plan to pump frequently (ep or daily for work). Medela freestyle if only pumping here and there.
eggplant / 11716 posts
@catomd00: I was an EPer for 13 months and used my Freestyle rather than my PISA for 11 of those months.

@BabyPenguinXO: I don't know - I have the freestyle and the ability to move my LO from one spot to another, change her diaper, hang up laundry, crate the dogs so they don't go ballistic and wake up the baby when I see UPS approaching, etc etc all are worthwhile to me to be mobile while pumping even though 90% of the time I just sit and pump!

@MenagerieMama: I was pumping for a preemie and tthe LCs and nurses always said to relax in a quiet spot where you can think about your baby to get the best results. Tell you what it sure worked for me! I always pumped more bedside vs away from him. I think trying to do all that while pumping is good in theory but just doesn't seem realistic and I would personally worry about my supply. Also, I pumped into bottles and if I bent over to far the milk leaks out. There is a hole on the flange that milk will leak from if you're in the wrong position. But that was my experience as well as many in my birth group. People do often forget about the hands free bra though which is amazing!

PISA is what I got last time and it worked well, but this time I am going to pay the difference to get the Freestyle. I'll keep the Freestyle at home and the PISA at work.
Also, just double check that they will really cover any pump. I was told that my insurance would cover any pump by an insurance phone rep, but when it came time to actually order from the medical supply company they said that was not the case, only an Ameda was covered. Super frustrating.

@NeekieRose: I confirmed with my HR today actually about a pump, and all I need to do is bring a receipt into work, and my work will directly reimburse me for it, and they deal with the insurance company themselves She's a mom as well, and also recommended that I don't skimp out on a pump! So I'm pretty sure any pump will be covered (within reason....probably not the symphony!!)

So what exactly is the difference between the PISA and Freestyle? The Freestyle is more mobile?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@MrsBrewer: Yeah the freestyle is a portable battery operated unit! I have both and the freestyle is great. I could put it in my bathrobe pocket, walk around the house and get coffee and pump before E woke up, then disconnect and go about my day. With my PISA, it had to be plugged into the wall and the cord wasn't super long, so i pretty much had to sit on one spot on the couch. I just hated being tethered like that. If i wanted to get up and pee or get water or the baby dropped her paci, i was able to do it. Plus the freestyle is smaller and was something i could drop in my purse and take with me. The PISA needed its own bag and everything.
You do have to remember to charge it, though! I can't remember if it had a wall plug in with it. But once i thought i plugged it in overnight but it fell out of the plug and i was like gahhhh it's dead.

@blackbird: Do you think the suction on both was comparable? Were you able to pump the same amount of milk with both pumps?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@MrsBrewer: Yep, I actually felt like my freestyle was a bit stronger, probably because it was newer. I never noticed that i pumped more with one or the other, i always pumped a pretty shitty quantity.

I'm thinking about getting a Hygiea next time. I had an Ameda and it crapped out on me.

@MrsBrewer: Another vote for the Freestyle.
I work FT and EBFed LO1 and LO2 until their first birthdays (so I pumped a lot).
The freestyle is smaller, lighter, and portable (which means its easier to lug to the office, on business trips, or anywhere you are pumping). You can also move around while pumping (instead of having to stay tethered to a wall outlet).
When I was pregnant with LO2, I had the option of which pump I wanted (work also paid) and I got a second freestyle. That freestyle is still sitting in the box and I'm going to donate it now that I don't need it.
pomelo / 5220 posts
I have the PISA and I like it a lot. I kind of wish I had a freestyle though, cause being tethered to the wall is tough if LO is awake and moving around or if I am trying to fold laundry. 90% of the time, I am just sitting at my darn desk pumping anyway though so its NBD.

Where did those of you get a freestyle? I'm covered but the two online retailers I can't get a freestyle through and I can't just go through target or anything it has to be a medical equipment supplier.
