Mr. Bee and I are hoping to live in Paris for a year when Charlie and Olive are a little older. Paris is similar to New York (except cleaner and more beautiful), and it'd be easy to work from there. We could also travel around Europe easily and visit tons of other countries.

My husband would love to live in Spain because he lived in Barcelona & Madrid for a year after college. I would prefer a Spanish-speaking country since he speaks fluent Spanish and I speak/understand enough (thank you NYC!) to get around...but I'm not sure about Spain--I'm thinking Latin America somewhere--maybe Argentina?

Oh south of France, no question. If on normal finances, the suburbs of Nice. If on lottery money, in the hills above Cannes. We were there for a web film fest last october and just fell in love with the place. Also, fantastic health system in France. We talk sometimes about moving there eventually- say when the kids are in their twenties or so.

I wish my husband was cool with a plan like that. Actually, I wish we had professions where that would allow for that. I'd probably live in Italy. I've lived there before but I'd love to go back.

We've talked about central america and France. France is more because we husband's family is there so we've talked about going there for longer than a visit (but not permanent) a bit to help the kids learn the language.

I wouldn't want to move for a year. Is that weird? I like where I live! I like to travel and visit, but not for a whole year in one place. Wouldn't mind traveling the world for a year though!
I did a summer in London for college. It was fun then, but it's not something I'd want to do now.

I think England. It's different enough to be an adventure, but they still speak English, so maybe it wouldn't be a total culture shock. Plus it's close to other parts of Europe so I could do mini-trips to other places.

My husband and I also hope to spend an extended stay in a foreign land when our children are growing up. Most places in Europe would fit the bill, but I like the sound of Sweden, France or Switzerland particularly. I hope it happens!

We're living abroad now and I'm enjoying it, especially since we are currently in Tokyo. DH is due for another transfer soon an we have to pick our top 3 cities we'd like to move to (where DH's hotel chain exists). It's hard because I'd rather just stay here.

Hong Kong or Singapore, our birth countries. But the thought of having to still pay mortgage on our current place AND rent for a year is too daunting.

My husband's boss recently spoke to him about possible placement in various European and Asian countries. I was so excited when he told me but he ended up telling him about our pregnancy instead and how that wouldn't be a good idea right now for us. Then I was like ... "oh yeh." =P
France was on the list, and Hong Kong, and France just sounds so nice! Perhaps not when we have a newborn but as a toddler that would be awesome!
I do think it'll be hard to adjust without all the comforts of home though. A year placement would be living with the minimum, although we live pretty simply as is.
It's definitely something to look forward to for us and the hubs agreed that it be possiblity once our LO gets a little older.

For just one year, it would have to be a place where I am either fluent in the language or could speak English. I don't see the value in just going somewhere for a year because honestly, you won't integrate into the community, you'll probably still have to send your kids to an international school and in the end, you'll spend a lot of money just to set up a small household. For me, I'd have to be somewhere at least 5 years to get anything out of it.
I came to Switzerland because my husband is Swiss and I can tell you first hand, it's not the easiest place to live. Locals aren't open to "auslanders" and while there's a large English speaking expat group, it's mainly in Zurich. Once you get out of Zurich, you won't find many expats, except in Geneva.
eta: oh and one more thing, unless you're Swiss, married to a Swiss or your company can prove that they can't find a Swiss or European person to do the job, forget about finding a job here. I was basically told "no thanks" until I got my working permit by marrying my husband.

@looch: It's the exact same way in Sweden. Ridiculously hard to find a job for immigrants! And like you said, without a permit, employers would have to first prove that no Swedes qualify, then anyone else from the EU, before even offering a foreigner the job. And although everyone speaks English, you won't be able to do much without knowing Swedish (specialty research positions excluded).

@Crumbs: I was shocked by it, to be honest. My company in the US was loaded up with Swiss people working in the US, so I thought it would be super easy to get a job in the same company in Switzerland.
I also agree about the language...even though the business language was English, there was still a lot of German spoken.

Our kids will grow up abroad at least for the first ten years of their lives in Kosovo, but that's because that's where we'll be working. It wasn't chosen based on where we would like to live, per say.
I think that if we do get the opportunity, we will spend six months to a year in someplace outside Europe, like Morocco or India.

Well we thought we wanted to move to New Zealand or Australia but we've done a bunch of research and found that a lot of people don't like living in NZ, there are few jobs, it's really expensive, etc. Australia unfortunately bans pit bulls so we would not be able to move there.
Other than that, Id love to live somewhere in the Caribbean!
