Do you feel obligated to get them a gift?

Yes
I have a fear someone will give me something and I won't have anything to give back!

Yes! I really need to keep extra gifts around for these occasions.

Yes! It's so incredibly awkward when they get you one and you have nothing to give back. Then the next year you get them something (you know, because they got you something last year), but they then don't get you anything! Happened multiple times. Now we just have a few backup options. I wish we didn't feel the guilt/pressure, that's not what it's supposed to be about!

@simplyfelicity: I'm guilty of regifting on such occasions
I keep cards around & throw in a gift card (I always seem to have gift cards I haven't used lying around) . It's bad, I know.

@Mrs. Champagne: @Mrs. Lovejoy: a good friend just text me asking what I want! I so wasn't expecting anything from her - so now I have to get something! At least she didn't surprise me with a gift and catch me off guard!

Has anyone seen the Big Bang Theory on this exact dilemma? It's hilarious!!

@mrs. bird: That's not bad, it's resourceful! I once snuck away to the store after a coworker gave me a gift unexpectedly. I told her it was in my car.

Yes! I always feel so bad if someone gets me something and I don't have a gift for them.

Yes! I hate being caught off guard like that. At least you got a bit of a heads up!

I feel guilty but I usually dont reciprocate because I don't want to start a gift exchange with more people. I'll get them a little treat later to make up for it.

@wrkbrk: that's exactly what I thought of!
I usually bake something to give away, and make truffles. If anyone unexpectedly brings me something, I can reciprocate with baked goods.

@Mrs. Pen: I usually do; but you shouldn't/
My MIL says, don't deny anyone a blessing and if it a blessing for them to find a gift for you, don't deny it because you didn't know and didn't get them something, too.

@wrkbrk: I love that episode. "you haven't given me a gift, you gave me an obligation."
@Mrs. Pen: It depends on the situation. If someone catches me off guard and gives me something I don't feel the need to rush out and get something to them. I would just send a nice thank you note. If I knew in advance like you would I probably would get something unless finances wouldn't allow it.
