Say you went to a diner and ordered a dish (say, corned beef hash)... and found a hair in it.
Would you:
* pick out the hair and eat your food
* send it back to the kitchen and request a replacement
* leave the restaurant and not return
* something else?

I would send it back for sure. And maybe not go back? I think that if the kitchen is lax enough for hair to get in food, then that just might gross me out enough to not go back!

Send it back. It definitely needs to be shown to manager and kitchen so that they know they need to use better standards.
If it were a place I had never been to before I wouldn't go back. But if it were the first incident at a place I go to often I wouldn't be so quick to judge.

I would send it back. It happens. I would be wary of the new dish though. If it were gross enough I would send it back and leave. It depends on the situation and whether I believed it was a simple accident or a lack of care in the kitchen. I would probably be more understanding if I had been there before with no problems.

Send it back and get a replacement. I'd hope the manager would be informed. If I had good luck at that particular restaurant before I'd give it a second chance. If I had never been there before it would probably turn me off.

Send it back! I hate finding hairs in my food. Once at a coffee shop I use to work at, one of the baristas cleaned the steam wand with a rag then made a latte. The guy drank half of it at a table, came back and said, "I think...there is a hair in this?". I poured it down the sink after she made him a new drink and it was a huge clump of the rag! The fuzzy string from the rag was what he thought was hair. Ick. Poor guy.

I would send it back and request something else (an entirely different meal as I wouldn't want to risk them picking out the hair and tossing it around the pan)
I would also expect my meal to be comped (or at least a percentage taken off) It is such an inconvenience to eat at a different time than whomever I am with or have them sitting there with their food getting cold waiting for me.
If the management took care of it accordingly - I would definitely go back (mistakes happen). But if I am expected to not eat at the same time with my friends/family, find a hair in my food, wait for a new meal and still pay full price - I wouldn't go back.

Send it back and ask for something else. I agree with @Reese, I would expect my meal to be comped. If they charged me for my plate, I wouldn't go back.

I would send it back and expect not to be charged. Wouldn't want a replacement (usually I lose my appetite when I find things in my food).
I'd expect some sort of discount or freebie too.

I would send it back and probably not get anything else. I would be grossed out!
Then again with 3 pugs I do get pug hair in everything I personally cook. It's not the fact that it is hair as much as knowing it was lax, and someone else's hair and God knows what else is in the food.
But yeah pug hair, we joke, is a condiment in our house.

I would not send it back!! So they can just take out the hair, spit in it and reheat it? I'd eat around it and never go back lol.

if it's a normal wispy head hair, i'd just eat around it. it happens.
if it's a really long hair or otherwise gross, i'd just stop eating.
while eating some seaweed salad one time, i bit down on a hog ring (like a staple but thicker). we told the kitchen and i think they might have comped us for something, but i was still pretty upset about it. mostly because they pretty much admitted that they grabbed the seaweed from the bag and put it on the plate, rather than picking through it like you would for other produce at any decent restaurant.

I eat around it. I feel really bad about returning food. That and I'm afraid what they will do to my replacement.

Send it back! A few years ago a group of us were out eating & DH and another guy in our group wouldn't stop laughing. I kept asking what was so funny & they wouldn't answer. A couple weeks later DH broke down & admitted there was a piece of hair on my plate & that he'd quickly picked it off before I saw it. So. Gross. I'll never let him live that down.

@mrbee: If it's corned beef hash, i'm assuming it's at a diner and not some fancy place? I don't know, am i the only one who may not make a big deal? Okay, if it's a super long hair i'd send it back but i definitely wouldn't expect my meal to be comped. It's a totally different story if it's at a nice restaurant.

Is hair actually unhygienic? Can you get sick from it? Just curious because everyone always seems so grossed out and I guess I'm just "meh". Pick it off? But I also gave my kids pacifiers that they had thrown on the ground without washing them...

Not to sound gross, but it depends what kind of hair it looks like if ya know what I mean! If it was a normal hair from someone's head, I would probably eat around it. Though I would likely not go back again. If it looked like another hair, I would say something, and just ask to not pay for my meal. Then, I would likely leave to eat elsewhere and never return there.

DH and I have found hair in our food before. We sent the dish back and got it taken off our bill. Then we finished the rest of our meal and never went back.

Meh depends on the hair. Sometimes I can't tell if it's mine or the restaurant chef's so I just move it aside and eat around it. Goodness knows I've picked cat hair out of my food at home. If it grosses me out, I'd return it. If you're in a nice restaurant, a manager usually is on the line doing expediting so it's not like the guy cooking has free reign to do whatever he wants to your food. I worked in a restaurant for years. Trust me, a hair should be the least of anyone's concern lol. Not that restaurants are gross, it's just near impossible to keep everything totally sanitary.

@Mrs. Superhero: Nope you can't technically catch anything from a piece of hair, unless it was like, sneezed on right before it went into your food.
I found a FEW hairs once in a ready-made meal from WHOLE FOODS of all places. I got to the first one and thought huh maybe that was mine.. then got to a 2nd and threw the rest of it out. I didn't bother calling them to complain because I've eaten their food for years without any previous issues so was probably just an anomaly.

This happened to a friend of mine while we were both out to eat together at a neighborhood breakfast-lunch place. His omelette had a hair in it. The restaurant replaced his meal and still charged him full price. The restaurant said he should pay because he ate another full meal. He said he should not have to pay because there was a delay in when both meals were served and eaten (mine and his) due to the hair in the first meal. The restaurant finally comped his meal and I never went back.

I would send it back and then leave. I wouldn't be rude about it or be angry - I'd just be grossed out and look for something different to eat. Depending on the establishment, I may go back at another time.
