how long did the fussiness last? DS is 6 weeks and on his second reflux medicine. He still spits up a lot (projectile spitup!) and cries a lot. He seems so uncomfortable, even though the medicine has made things a little better. Will it get better with time or should we ask to see a pediatric GI specialist?

It peaked at eight weeks for us and then dropped off at around twelve weeks. I think the projectile spit up stopped around eight or nine weeks once her little tummy got big enough and she got better at dealing with my let down.
Is your LO crying all the time, or does it really ramp up in the late afternoon/evenings? If its the latter, I'd say it will get better in time, but if he's miserable all day it wouldn't hurt to get in touch with your pediatrician.

@Elderberrygin: Before the medicine, he would cry every feeding cycle. The crying would be the screaming type of crying and he'd arch his back the entire time. Now that he's on the second medication, his crying seems more like regular baby crying and it isn't nearly as often. He does cry more in the evenings. I wonder if that is just witching hour crying or if it is still the reflux bothering him. Thanks for the input. I'm really hoping that things get better at 12 weeks.

LO's fussiness (though fussy doesn't even begin to describe how miserable he was!) peaked between 5-8 weeks and then we saw a dramatic shift sometime between 3 and 4 months, just in time for me to go back to work! He spit up pretty regularly up until just about a year, even on medication, but was incredibly happy from 4 months on.

@MrsKoala: our dr said colick peaks around six weeks. Does he still arch his back? LO has really bad reflux and has started doing this when we try to burp her

@MrsH: He still arches his back, which is why I'm sure he is still uncomfortable.

@MrsKoala: Do you give the med once or twice a day? Maybe it's wearing off in the evenings? Give the med at least 2 weeks to fully take effect, but if it's still not working well, try something else! Prevacid worked best for us, but my lo also needed thickened feeding so I ended up mixing bm and enfamil ar and bottle feeding.

@Mrs Green Grass: We started off on Pepcid but they changed his medication to Axid. The instructions say to give .9mL 3 times a day so we are giving it to him every 8 hours. Our ped told us to check back in with her after 1 week so I guess I just assumed we would see a major difference in that time. Glad to know that it might take up to 2 weeks to make a difference.

M didn't get better until we diagnosed her MSPI and got her on hypoallergenic formula
I wouldn't hesitate to see a pedi GI, especially if you're on your second reflux med. It couldn't hurt, right? I found my regular pedi to be not very helpful with this stuff. I think she thought we were just new parents who didn't understand that babies cry. I hope things get better for you and baby soon!

LO is 4 months and we just upped his meds dosage. He is a little better, but he is the.gassiest.kid.ever. We have to do gas drops at every feeding/bicycle his legs. The ped said it will all get better with age, as his GI develops better.

@MrsKoala: I can't encourage you enough to take your LO to a Ped GI specialist. My LO needed surgery to fix her reflux (a rare occurrence!). And reflux is (generally) at its worst from 4-6 months. So, it might get worse before it gets better.

@MrsF: @MsLipGloss: I'm going to call our ped and see what she thinks in terms of his improvement. If she thinks we should see a specialist, then I already have a recommendation of someone to see. Luckily, she's been really supportive about this.

@Mrs. J: N is super gassy all the time, too. I do the bicycle when he starts crying but didn't think to do it preemptively.. I'll look into that.

@MrsKoala: I scanned but didn't see, are you nursing? My LO's reflux was gone when I cut 100% of dairy. Hope it resolves soon poor baby!

@MrsKoala: Prevacid worked really well for us...just fyi.
And my lo still has reflux at 14 months which is much longer than average. But it stopped really bothering him when we started prevacid and thickened feedings.

@scg00387: I am nursing. I cut out dairy and caffeine completely when he first started the screaming crying but it didn't seem to change anything so I gradually added it back in. It didn't get worse when I started with dairy again either.

I have to second @MrsF: -- my LO was/is lactose intolerant, and the screaming/crying and back arching went on for FOUR MONTHS because my first pediatrician kept reassuring me that babies cry a lot in the beginning, clearly thinking I was a pretty clueless first time mom. I bitterly regret not insisting that something was really wrong and waiting so long for further evaluation and a second opinion, because he was a completely different baby after we switched to hypoallergenic formula - so happy and easy-going. I definitely recommend getting a second opinion!

LO had extreme reflux so it lasted until her first birthday.

I called the ped and she is scheduling an ultrasound today at our local children's hospital to check for pyloric stenosis and then we'll proceed from there on what to do depending on whether the ultrasound is positive or negative.
