Did you experience the "high" after delivery that people talk about/you read about in books?
Do you think that this sensation is muted/not as prevalent when there are meds involved?

No I did not, but then again I was exhausted, tachycardic, and traumatized. I think it overwhelmed the high.
I have seen women get the high though, lots of them. It totally exists.

Yeah, I felt amazing after delivery. I think mostly from the feeling that all the pain was gone finally and that I had accomplished what I set out to do.
What's weird is that thinking back on it now, after time has passed, I don't think so fondly of it. I'm dreading thinking about having to go through all that again.

I felt wonderful after delivery. I do think it exists and is muted with drugs in the system just based on friends/ family that I've seen.

I ask because I felt so incredible after my delivery with #2. I felt like superwoman. I jokingly tell my DH that we need to have at least one more--not because I want a bigger family--but because I have to experience that high at least one more time in my life. There's no drug like it.

I felt wonderful after delivery after both deliveries so far. DS was med free and S wasn't but I felt great after both, physically.

@matador84: I still can't get over your birth with #2. I felt like superwoman after my med-free birth and it was in a hospital.... you must have felt like superwoman x1000!!!!!

I felt it even though I had two medicated births! More with my first though, maybe because I wasn't induced?

I had a low dose walking epi just for delivery but I was high as a kite. I was high on life. Best moment of my life, eternally happy. Drugs or no drugs have nothing to do with it. At least for me, I felt wonderful the moment she came and before that (when I got my epi!). Before the epi... no. I felt horrible. After she came I didn't feel the pitocin shot or third stage or even notice anything but her. I walked out after and felt great.

Yes, it was an incredible high. I don't know what it was - Endorphins? Adrenaline?

@HLK208: I was induced with W and I definitely didn't feel as great afterwards. I wonder if pitocin/induction plays a role?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: neither can I!!! In process of writing my birth story.
I was def laughing and joking with my doctor and nurses and just high as a kite on life as you can be!!!

I definitely had a high, but I would describe it as more of a inability to feel the exhaustion and pain.

I had a med-free birth and a pretty quick and easy delivery, although I did need stitches (and had topical lidocaine applied). I just remember the stitches hurting...don't recall feeling high at all, mostly just shock that a little person really did just come out of me.

Total high. Sort of like I was stoned...I felt amazing...Intense relief...Happy dazed.

hm... i felt really great afterward, but i guess i just assumed it was all the endorphins from having a baby and everyone had that?

It was definitely a rush! I remember they were cleaning her up, and my first thought was: I could totally do that again!
Aaand then the shakes set in lol

Nope. At first I just wanted my stitches to be finished and then I got really thirsty and shaky. Maybe I will get the high next time!?

Not so much for me but I was on pinto com and mag sulfate so j think that may have interfered with it!

Total high. Also rode it for several weeks - absolutely incredible.

I just had the gas, and I think I definitely had the high - when people ask me about the labour I tell them that that was actually the easy part!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
My meds had worn off by the time she was actually here, but there was definitely no 'high'. The only high was how high I was on gas when they started my stitches afterwards

Funny, I was the opposite. I had an epi with DS but did feel a high/emotional surge right after the birth. With DD, I only labored 45min, so no time for an epi, and I felt 100% normal right after the birth (no highs or lows).

Not sure what books you're talking about but if they are the Ina may books, most of those ladies really were high (drugs)! I hope I get the natural birth I want and the natural high!!

I felt amazing after the birth, not sure how much difference meds would make. my husband was amazed how I was 100% on after all that work and pain during labor.
when we went to our recovery room (~8am after all night labor) his adrenaline crashed and he was snoring as loud as can be. I'd been through more physically but stayed up and called people and just stared at my baby all day!
