What vacuum do you use on them? We have Pergo floors in our current home that can take a lot and show no wear, but the home we are moving into has hardwoods. I've been reading that a lot of vacuums can damage the floor. I'm also interested in what you clean them with when you mop too!

I have a Dyson V6 and use it on my hardwood floors. It is amazing! Prior to owning one, I swept with a broom and dust pan. Not fun at all. It's a game changer in my house.

We have a Dirt Devil. It isn't the greatest vacuum, but gets the job done. We mop with a cloth headed mop and sometimes use a wet swiffer.

We vacuum with the Dyson Animal vac on the setting for hardwoods/low pile rugs and wash with a soft cloth mop and vinegar and water in a spray bottle.

I have an Electrolux Nimble, it has a "bare floor" setting that I use when I am doing the hardwoods.
My housecleaner uses an industrial vac that doesn't have brushes in the head, so it's gentle on the floors.

We have a bob robot vacuum and a regular hoover.
I also grew up with hardwoods, and have never experienced a vacuum causing damage.
But honestly, now that we have mostly hardwoods, we use a dry/dust mop WAY more than a vacuum. It's easier, more convenient, and I think it picks up more of the small dust.

But I don't really use it as intended. What I do, is I take a microfibre rag and fold in into a rectangle and place the head of the mop on top and push that around. I find the rag picks up SO much cat hair, it's amazing.
I wash the floors by hand occasionally and I just use some hardwood floor cleaner I buy at Dollarama. I do it by hand so I can control how wet the floors get, and dry it with a second cloth if needed.

I have a Dyson V6 Absolute and it makes my life so much easier. LOVE it.
I use a Bona mop to clean the floors.

I use a broom, then go over it with a wool dust mop.

I sweep and then do a quick vacuum with the dyson animal. I have a lot of pets, so the hair is out of control. Then I mop with a microfiber cloth mop and use Murphy's oil mixed with water in a zep spray bottle.

We don't use a vacuum on the hardwoods, I just sweep it every few days and then mop maybe once every 1-2 weeks.

Dyson vacuum and then a spray mop (can't think of the name right now) that has washable microfiber pad. Cleaning solution is part water, part white vinegar.

I usually do obviously dusty/pet hair-y spots with our dyson animal vac, then I use a dry duster to "sweep" the rest of the floor then I use the wet duster with Bona to wash it.

I have a dirt devil stick vac for the big stuff, then I sweep/swiffer, and then I mop with Method Wood for Good. I have cats and a dog, so this gets my floors squeaky clean.

I use a dyson canister..and we've scratched the floor more times dragging laundry baskets (seriously) than anything else - vac, dog, toys, kids included.

I don't use the vacuum on the hardwoods. I just sweep and mop with a very small amount of a dilute vinegar/water solution.

@sorrycharlie: Oh man, that sucks. I'm already worried about the moving in process and protecting the floors.
Thanks everyone! We have pets but it sounds like using our vacuum on the rugs and then a swiffer might be the way to go. And invest in a good mop...

@Tanjowen: we had the floors refinished and stained before moving in - they look fantastic even with a few stray scratches. and honestly I haven't even tried to buff them out or anything! my 3 year old zips around on this ride on thing, my little one has a walker - I was so nervous at first but I've realized how durable they really are. the only thing that scratched them was (for whatever reason?!) dragging laundry baskets..ha. oops. theres a few skinny white lines now. and then part of DD's play kitchen was off the felt slider and made a small scratch. but overall I'm impressed.

@Tanjowen: for moving in, just have some blankets on hand. I think hardwoods make it easier to push around the heavy stuff. Make sure the blankets are clean (so dirt or gravel don't scratch), and then put the heavy stuff on them and you can easily slide it around. Way easier than on carpet!
