I always let me kids pick and choose who they want to invite and it usually stays pretty small - however Miss Social DD wants to invite her whole class - there are 20 kids - if you invite the whole class how many actually show up - I really don't want 20 kids there - 12 would be ideal

A couple of kids recently invited the whole class and only about 4 or 5 showed up. There are social parents in the class who take their kids to all the parties and then there are the parents who don't.

For DS's 6th birthday he invited 12 kids and they all showed up!

My son's class is smaller (11 kids) and we had a lot of no RSVPs, but I attribute that to the timing (December). Normally, the whole class attends, but there is a lot of social engineering by the parents going on.
I'd say if you invite the whole class, plan for the typical 20% non acceptance rate.

We didn't do this, but one of the parents in DS's class did.
He has 10 kids in his class, and this was a 3 year old's party. Only 1 kid went (other than the birthday child obviously).

We've always invited the entire class (15 or so kids) and never had more than 5 show up.

Both kids always invited the whole class until DD got to elementary school. We always had about 15 kids show up for those parties. I noticed that less kids show up to parties at home, and more kids show up at a venue. Ours have always been at a venue.
