I would do the same as you. I forget how old your LO is, but in general, yeah, I'd keep them away from sick people. AND if I was your sister, I'd warn you to stay away anyway.

if it's sick kids, and especially the flu, I wouldn't risk it. Kids don't know to wash hands and not cough on people all the time. I might be a bit more "meh" if it was say an adult with a sore throat.

We stay away from sick people and when we're sick we stay home, away from others. DS, DD and I have such bad immune systems.

Obviously you can't avoid all germs but why would anyone willingly expose such a young baby to sick people? Honestly since your mom had already agreed to babysit I think your sister and her family should be staying home so you can go on with your plans without having to risk your baby getting sick.

I would not risk it either!

@Bao: If I know for certain that someone is ill or experiencing flu like symptoms I would try to keep my baby away just in case it is contagious like a cold. Why put a baby through that if its preventable

I actually just read that the flu is airborne on people's clothes and person for a while after they've vomited or had diarrhea (so gross to think about.) So even if they are not contagious anymore they could be bringing over the virus from their house.

Oh my goodness, no way, stay far, far away! Your LO is too little to have had the flu shot and you most definitely don't want her exposed to those germs! Put your LO first and to hell with the feelings of everyone else.

I just had a similar experience, except it was a bad cold and not the flu. We had to go visit DH's brother and his family for a few days (as we were only in the country for a short while and they hadn't met LO yet). They failed to mention all four of them, including their two toddlers, were all very unwell with colds, coughs, throat infections, and fevers, so we got there and walked into a germ factory. I wanted to leave the next morning but they had a bit of fit and were really mad that we would even suggest that, saying they weren't contagious any longer etc. I wasn't comfortable with the idea but in the interest of family harmony, we stayed for the three days. Sure enough, two days after we got back, LO came down with a terrible cold (her first illness) and 16 days later, she's still battling it. I still feel a ball of rage when I think of it and am so mad at myself for not putting the needs of my 6 month old ahead of some thoughtless, rude people! Also, DH and I both got sick as well - DH's cold turned into a sinus infection and mine turned into bronchitis. ARGH.....

Moral of the story, don't make the same mistake I did and put your LO's needs first and don't worry about upsetting others. There is nothing worse than seeing your baby unwell....and if it's something like the flu, that's even scarier!

@Bao: ummm you're totally right to keep her away!! I only bring DD over if a doctor has said they're not contagious. Also, if DDs sick, I get sick and that's no fun

BTW, my MIL pulled the same thing, she knew she was sick and still had us over when LO was still an infant! She was on vacation in another part of Europe and I specifically waited at least a week until we saw them in case they acquired an illness. Well she scheduled a visit WHILE she was sick and didn't tell us until we were already there! I was pissed.

Um no. Absolutely positively I would not take my lo around someone who I know is sick. I am a germ a phobe and I don't really care what others think of that. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Your sister is being very inconsiderate of you, your baby, and your mother. I would be so mad!!!

My inlaws are like this, they will take ALL of their grandkids at once (12) and not tell us/me until after we pick up that one of them was sick. I get so irritated about that.
