I was at home for 2 years, we lived in Swtizerland and were on one income, we did:

Swim lessons, 2 sessions, 6 months-18 months of age, $500
Zoo membership, 1 year cost us $450, but the second year was free because of a group my husband belonged to, this barely paid for itself, it was too far away for me to get to using public transportation
English speaking playgroup, $150 for 8 sessions

Now, we are back in the US (northeast, 50 miles north of NYC) and the activities are so much less expensive, but we still don't belong to a ton of things. We have a membership to the children's museum in town, which costs us $200 per year ($15 per person per visit without) and we have a caregiver added on.
We also did soccer, that cost us abot $300 for 10 sessions.

Another thing that we have is a culture program through my husband's employer that gives us discounted or free admission to certain things around here, like museums or zoos. We don't pay anything for that.

For the most part, day-to-day I just spend transit fare.
We are so lucky here (Toronto) there is a fabulous free drop-in centre that offers group play, gym sessions, workshops, music circles etc, so we go there a lot. I also bought memberships to a local museum and to the science centre, so we can go there without paying for each visit. In the circle of mum friends I have, we all have different memberships that allow us to bring guests for free so we can often get each other in attractions, for example, today we are going to an art gallery on another mum's membership. It means we do tons of different stuff but at minimal cost. Now the weather is nicer, we will do the playground a lot too, and we have a pool in our building so I can take her swimming for free.
We are considering putting her in music classes and soccer classes but that is more to do with her age, not to do with me staying home - we would be considering the same classes if I worked.

We typically do 3 classes a semester, and they range anywhere from $300-$700. NYC is unfortunately very expensive and there are not many free/low cost options. This summer we are only signed up for one thing (soccer) and I am hoping to do a lot of park time!

C is 21 months and we haven't signed up for any paid classes yet. We do one free pre-pre K class every week, which I feel like is good for getting her used to the concept without paying a ton. We also belong to the children's museum, which is $160. We were able to split it with a friend but it would have been worth the full price for sure.

Otherwise we have a weekly play group and go to library story times. I plan to sign up for swim lessons soon but we will start on the weekends because DH wants to go too.

Where I live there is nothing to do really right now. We did a work out class when he was a bay and that was $120 for 8 weeks.

We did kindermusik which was 4 classes for $60. Swimming lessons was 6 classes for around $65.

Currently we just bought a 10 class pass for swimming that was $40. Otherwise we just go to the park and play dates. We don't have a museum, zoo or anything like that any where close. No kids gym or anything either. If we had those things I would probably have a membership!!

The norm here is to go to playgroups, which are all run by various churches but have no religious component to them really. They're usually two hour sessions, one morning per week, and they have loads of toys, activities, and crafts/music for the kids, plus coffee/tea and cakes for the adults, and snacks for the kids, all for £1.50 per family, per session.

We usually attend three different ones per week, and walk to all of them, so we spend less than £5 ($7) per week on activities. Swimming is included with my gym membership (individual lessons cost a bit more but still reasonable) and we don't go all that often yet, although we probably will more now that the girls are a bit older, but I would still have my gym membership regardless or whether or not they had the swimming component, so I don't count that cost.

ETA: Most museums here are free and we are members of the National Trust (£79/yr, about $120) but that is more for DH and I, and kids under 5 are free anyway. England is great in that it has loads of free stuff everywhere you go!

@travelgirl1: the swimming is discounted because we're YMCA members- otherwise it would be double I think sports are definitely cheaper while they're younger! They not as organized until you get into leagues around age 6.
@blackbird: oh yeah- those gym classes, ballet, and the music together type stuff is all similarly priced- up to or more than $300 for 6-8 week sessions.

I sah with my 6 month old and we have decided that for the foreseeable future we will do one paid activity at a time and do 2 memberships a year. We also have the option of a few free activities, mostly through the library and a few drop in options which we seem to do once a month.

Music is $200/10 classes
Private swimming lessons are $40 split between 2-3 families
Drop in places range from $5-$15
Memberships are around $100 each

So averaged out we spend around $120/month on activities. We have always done a membership each year anyway and I took swimming lessons from the same instructor before she was born and I will take part of the 1 hour lesson when we start those again. We have an above average household income but not by much. Hopefully we can convince someone to do a membership as a birthday present for her this year which would also help us out a lot.

DD, who is 5, goes to gymnastics once a week and an art class once a week. She isn't in preschool, so she needs these activities. Art class was a one time payment of $200 for 10 weeks, gymnastics is about $50.
DS#1, who is 3, is in gymnastics once a week, and soccer (through the y) that has practice once a week and a game once a week. Gymnastics is about $50 a month and soccer was about $60 for the whole season (which feels like it is forever, but I think it is March to June)
DS#2, who is 16 months old, gets dragged to all those activities! so he doesn't do anything.
We have a membership to the zoo and go about once every three weeks or so. We also do a trampoline park once every three week, which is $12 for all of us for three hours.
The bigs will do two weeks of swim lessons in June at the Y and I think that was around $100 or so.

We belong to the local Children's Museum, the big Science Museum, and the zoo. We also pay a monthly membership to a local playspace. All of these total about 400 dollars a year, I'd say, so about $35 a month. We don't do any classes. We visit a lot of parks in the summer, too.

My husband earns a great income, but even if he didn't, I'd still be likely to scrimp elsewhere to afford these things. I might cut out one, but we really value having all of these places to go - I hate sitting around at home.

ETA: Holy carp, I cannot believe how much some of you guys have to pay for stuff! I've felt like I was spending a lot.

i'm not a sahm but right now we pay for a botanical garden membership, ballet classes, and korean school classes.

when we had a nanny, we usually paid for a children's museum and zoo membership, one class at a gymboree type place (gym/music/etc.) which included a play gym membership. then one off singalongs which were usually $5.

annual memberships are usually a little over $100/year for most places.

I am at home, and our kids activities are:

-family zoo membership (plus parking pass) $280/year

-3 year old in daycare 3 days a week ~$650 a month
-3 year old in city run swimming ~80/10 weeks
-3 year old in city run ballet at a 'community school' where lessons are FREE YAY!!!

-5 year old in sparks $160/year
-5 year old in swimming $300/10 weeks
-5 year old in ballet $700 for school year

We are starting soccer next month for both gals, and I can't wait!

Overall it is way more than I want to spend, but it works so far for us...

I work OOH 2 days/week and we have a nanny those days. We pay for swim lessons through the YMCA ($55/8 classes), gymnastics (1x/week @$57/month), and then we try to use the library passes for discounts to the zoo and museums close by. I also have several friends with annual passes to the zoo and local museums so we can usually get in for free, or for a minimal cost.

ETA: We also send our son to preschool two mornings a week. It's $180/month.

It really varies for us because we have a lot of 6-8 week programs that run between $85-100 but we only sign up for them once in a while, mostly winter. We also do mops which is $50 for the school year and a local tot group is $25 for the year. Our zoo membership was $120 I think. Last year we did one session of swim lessons that I think cost around $140. This summer we are going to try to get them into survival swim which is very expensive, over $1000 for both of them. In September my oldest will be in preschool at $185/month.

We do a lot of free activities like the park, library and free music times at the library. Plus farmer markets. We live in the sf Bay Area and classes are expensive, plus my daughter has no attention span. Most classes work out to be $17-22 per class (like $260 for a 12 week music class).

We are currently taking a music class at a farm 40 min away which is $90 for six weeks. We also have a membership to the local children's museum which was $150 for the year. Sometimes we check out free museum passes from the library too. I'd love to do gymnastics with LO but classes start at 8 am and that isn't happening.

@travelgirl1: my LO is only 16 weeks so we just discovered it but I'm already in love.

We might be moving out of Ontario and it makes me sad because I don't think there as many resources for young kids in other Proviences/Territories.

I feel like a slacker mom! We don't really do any classes, although maybe I should look into swimming. Although how do you do swimming lessons if you have two?

We do have a children's museum membership gbat was a christmas gift and and I run a hiking group for moms, which we do twice a week. Other than that we just hang out at home,
Cook, go to the library, playground.

@jedeve: That's been the main reason we haven't started swimming lessons yet - it won't work with two LOs and one adult! My gym offers classes on Saturdays as well, so one of these years, I will get around to enrolling DD1 for a Saturday morning class and DH can take her whilst I stay home with DD2. Our gym also has a crèche so if I felt super inclined, I could always put DD2 in the crèche during a weekday lesson - not sure if that would be an option where you are....

$25 a year at 16 months. He does a baby playtime at the library once a week and we go to a local mom's group that is a $25 annual membership fee.

In the Fall, he will start a baby playskool that will be $125 a month for 2 days per week, and for his 2nd birthday we will probably purchase a zoo membership.
