...then you shouldn't open gifts at the party, right?
For LO's first birthday, we're saying no gifts necessary, but understand that some people might bring something anyway. However, I don't want people to feel bad for not bringing anything!
What's the protocol? Fwiw, I'd love an excuse NOT to open gifts, (the party is only for 2 hours, that might eat up a large chunk of time! Also, I'm shy) but not if it's a major no-no.

When they handed us the gifts we thanked them and put them in a pile. We did not open any gifts at all.

I would not open gifts in that case. I was just at a party where it was very clearly stated to not bring gifts. A few guests ignored the no-gifts policy... and then the parents did gift opening at the end of the party. It made me feel horrible that I didn't bring a gift.

Yeah, I would say don't open them at the party, since not everyone will bring a gift and then those people might feel bad! Open them after the party and send thank you notes!

Yep! We said no gifts, people brought gifts, we opened them later and mailed thank you cards. This was for her 1st birthday, too.

I wouldn't open gifts if you requested no gifts. I'd send a thank you card later to those who brought gifts.

We did not open them at the party (we whisked them out of sight) and sent thank you cards later.

@Arden: good idea about whisking them away, lyrically best not to have anything sitting there!
