If your LO is in big bed, how do you keep them in their room? We had baby gate in front of DS room but he learned to open it. Needless to say, I had unexpected visitor at 4 am this morning.

I read about two tricks
1) get a toddler clock...lights up when they are allowed to leave their room and come get you.... from LayBabyLay
2) create a middle of night wake cards...child gets to redeem a card for something like water, monster spray, or trip to potty. They only get a chance to use 1 or 2 cards a night. A mom of a frequent waker came up with this.

I don't restrict my son from coming out of his room, or out of his bed. The only time he has gotten up in the night recently was to use the bathroom.
What was his reason for coming out, was it for something specific?

@looch: he told me he was awake. I told him it was still bedtime and he went back to sleep for 2 hours.

She gets out of bed to sleep on her floor sometimes, but doesn't leave her room. She has only done that once.

@BandDmommy: we have knobs and a door knob cover that she hasn't figured out yet.
So far she stays in her bed until I get her in the morning which is shocking to me.

@oliviaoblivia: we have lever door handles. I can't believe he can open the baby gate! There are adults that struggle opening it.

@BandDmommy: for my projects I sprays specify levers, but for my own house I got knobs because they're more difficult for small hands. Too bad kids! I can believe he can open the gate, that's scary. Can he do the ones on your stairs?

@oliviaoblivia: we took it down because he was trying to climb over it. That's why we moved gate to front of his door. He's very good with steps but it scares me that he can wander around the house if he wants to.

@BandDmommy: hmmm, sounds like something my son would say, no real reason, lol. In those instances, I am not sure anything would really keep him in the room, other than a barrier!
