what time do they go to bed?
LO (20 months) has been waking up between 5:30 and 6 for over 2 weeks now, despite any efforts to get her to go back to sleep. Trying to figure out a good bedtime. Is 8/8:30 too late?

My late riser is all of the sudden getting up between 6-6:30. She goes to bed between 7:30-8. She's 14.5 months!

I dont think it's too late and it doesn't hurt to try.
In our case, DS still wakes up at the same time no matter what time he goes to bed.

i think it's a little late. charlie was an early riser around 5am and he went to bed around 7pm. try moving bedtime back 15 minutes each day and see if it has an impact!

That is what we do but she has never slept well (in terms of number of hours)

I put my LO down at 8 every night and she gets up usually between 6-7 am. But she does go through phases where she gets up 5-6am and that is horrible for us! It usually lasts a few days, it has lasted a month before and then it goes back to 6-7 again. I can't put her down earlier, it leaves us too rushed and frantic after work.

@NovBaby1112: I don't have a toddler, (well, I almost do, she's 1 in a couple days!) but she has always been a very early riser, and I kept moving her bedtime earlier going by the "early bedtime equals more sleep" rule---and long story short, that did not work at all for us. The earlier I moved her bedtime, the earlier she woke up.
Currently while I'm on summer vacation, I've moved her bedtime all the way back to 8:30 pm and she sleeps till 7:30 am now! Which is miraculous in our house. She used to go to bed at 6 pm and wake up 5 am (or earlier).
I also work really hard to tire her out right before bed, I feed her solids dinner, then we go out to the park and play hard for an hour, then come home and do bath, bottle, night routine and she passes out. It's great! With the earlier bedtime, there was no time for the park after I got home from work.

My LO woke between 4:30 & 5:30 from 10-16 months. She went to be at 7:15. We tried everything I could think of adjusting bedtimes and eating schedules (and CIO). We weaned last week and this week she's sleeping almost until 6. I don't know if the two are related but I'm enjoying the sleep!

My early rising toddler goes to bed anywhere between 6:45 and 7:20 These days it's on the earlier end because we are also transitioning to one nap. I am jealous of anyone whose kid sleeps past 6.

When my LO goes through a 5-6am wake up phase bedtime doesn't change anything.
She is awake 90% of the time by 6:30am.

My toddler has had an 8-8:30 bedtime since she was a little over a year. I don't think it's too late. "Early to bed, late to rise" stopped working for us around 18 months.

It doesn't matter what time she wakes up she won't go to sleep till 730-745 unless she doesn't nap that day. She wakes between 530-700, usually 630

LO (18 mos) generally gets up around 6 every day (but it fluctuates a little bit). She goes down between 6:45 and 7:30.

@mrsjyw: same with my LO. it's like her body clock is set to 5:30/6 lately- no clue why!
@Mrs. Bee: well, i TRY putting her to bed around 6:45/7pm, but she doesn't actually fall asleep until 8/8:30 crib to bed transition is kicking my butt!
@SleepyMonkey: ugh, I am praying this is a phase and not our new wake up time!
@Anagram: that's awesome! I would love that...I'm hoping that maybe it'll just take a few more days for the later bedtime to cause her to at least sleep in past 6am....
@Corduroy: hope she keeps it up for you, that's great!!
@Weagle: what time does your LO wake up? I think this is what is happening with mine too...I think maybe her sleep needs decreased...
Thanks everyone! I've been stressing a bit about LO's sleep (or lack there of) lately and it helps to hear what other LO's are doing...

My 16 month old has always been an early riser and goes to bed at 6:30/7. We tried a later bedtime but he still wakes up early and is more tired the next day. He sleeps 7-6ish normally.

@NovBaby1112: She wakes up between 7 and 8. We did have a period of early wake-ups around the same age as your LO, but it was a phase. She figured it out on her own, even though it took a few months.

@Weagle: I'm hoping this is another one of thos early wake up phases we get every once and awhile!

LO is an early riser no matter what time she goes to bed. I just always hope she makes it to 6 am...

Is she taking a really long nap? Maybe she's maxing out on sleep?
I don't think 8-8:30 is too late. I'm assuming you have blackout blinds?
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
G refuses to go to bed any later than 6:45, and wakes up no later than 6:20 (and that's new, it used to be 5:30!). She just doesn't nap enough at daycare, so she tanks up at night.
grapefruit / 4066 posts
@Sammyfab: she naps for 2 - 2.5 hours pretty consistently, from about 12-2ish. Yes on the blackout blinds and white noise as well. Yesterday she woke at 6am, napped from 12:15-2:45, and fell asleep at 8:30pm, then woke at 5:45am today.

@NovBaby1112: Ok...so she's getting around 12 hours total sleep which is not abnormal for her age. My best advice is to either push bedtime back or shorten her nap if you want a later wake up or more night sleep.
I also wanted to mention that my son binges and purges on sleep. One week he sleeps a ton and the next week he sleeps less. It all averages out in the end and he gets anywhere from 12-13 hours of total sleep per day. He also tends to sleep a bit less when he has teeth coming in (which, thankfully, is the only teething symptom we have). He's 28 months.

@Sammyfab: ok, thank you! I don't know if I can handle a bedtime later than 8:30pm lol, I really need some "me" time in the evenings! So maybe I will try shortening her nap (as much as i HATE waking her) ugh. Maybe limit it to 1.75 hours? I DO think she is working on her canines on the bottom though too..
pomegranate / 3383 posts
@NovBaby1112: Maybe even just start limiting at 2 hours? I also hate later bedtimes. When we put my son down after 8pm it feels like we have no down time at night! Also, is she ok hanging out for a bit after she wakes up? I would set a 'do not get out of bed' time. You could set some sort of clock or light on a timer (or something like the Gro Clock) to help. We never get my son out of bed before 7am.

@Sammyfab: well, currently i have to lay next to her to get her to fall asleep on her floor bed at night since she climbed out of crib a couple weeks ago- she screams if i try to leave room. so when she wakes in the AM she immediately starts looking for me and goes to the door yelling. that's probably part of the problem. but then i get back in bed with her hoping maybe she will sleep for a little longer, and she just wants to play/get up. I did buy her a little owl clock, but she's still a tad young, but I am hoping it will help in a few months...
